In broad strokes the subject/object of my work is focused on the Anthropocene geological era and stemmed eco-dystopic themes. Influences that affect my research approach include the typical contemporary eco-political issues related to the subject, yet ever more important are personal mythologies, Nova Scotian folklore, pop-culture consciousness of eco-dystopic futures, literature and most importan
tly, music. Methods vary as I work on a project specific basis preferring to take cues from the subject as to how the visuals should be developed, however the majority of my recent work is rooted in a marriage of digital and analog processes, such as these typical steps: photograph, collage, hand-laid gild gridding, raster painting, media transfer, acrylic painting. Work that I have been crafting in the more recent past few months has returned me to sculpture, photography and video as possible methods for exploration. The doing of the work focuses my mind on my oft opposed feelings about ecological issues and societal hypocrisies while providing me with a space to contemplate the question: do we as a nation (and a species) that continues to irrevocably erode the natural environment deserve this outcome? My greatest personal demon is a desire to be illustrative, which is something that I combat through my processes of crafting work through the invitation of rhythms, sound, destructive processes and then reconstitution. The play with these processes are important to obscuring the clarity of opinion in my own mind as my work attempts to foretell possible futures, not necessarily plausible ones.
