That passion gave birth to Cause Farm — a creative marketing agency whose sole mission is to support cause-related organizations tackling worthwhile issues. Although we’re a little late for , we’re excited to celebrate Nurit Siegel Smith — a real life with a wry sense of humor, infectious laugh and a true passion for the arts.

Nurit is the executive director of House of Blues Music Forward Foundation — an organization that helps young people ages 12-22 develop skills to secure employment in the music industry and related fields by contributing over a million dollars a year to music industry education. “We want to give young people the skills and knowledge for success in any endeavor [and] for them to reach their highest potential.”

Nurit has spent more than 20 years in the nonprofit sector with a focus on arts and entertainment. Before joining Music Forward, she was deputy director at Grand Performances and director of institutional advancement and strategic partnerships at SAG-AFTRA Foundation.

Born in Israel and raised in Los Angeles, she started out as a dancer and performing artist, so it was a natural transition for her to take on a leadership role in nonprofit arts.

Nurit is most excited about Music Forward’s work building career pathways for underserved youth and groups that are underrepresented in the industry, including young women. “Music is such a powerful force — it is a universal language that influences everyone. That’s why it’s so important to make sure all viewpoints are represented in its creation and dissemination.”

Last year, under her leadership, Music Forward quickly mobilized and partnered with Live Nation to establish Crew Nation to assist live music crews globally who lost jobs overnight to the coronavirus pandemic. In less than one year, they raised $18 million.

Her genuine passion for the arts may be attributed to being an artist herself, but it is Nurit’s inimitable spirit and determination that allows this to thrive and make a difference in the world.

What happens when a unicorn meets an angel? You get Richard Ayoub — a with a radiant smile and boundless enthusiasm.

Richard is the executive director of Project Angel Food (PAF) — an organization that prepares and delivers healthy meals to people impacted by serious illness, bringing comfort and hope every day.

Richard started out in the world of journalism and his ability to tell stories combined with his compassion were the perfect fit to help PAF thrive. As a TV news producer, his goal was to “give a voice to the underdog and make a difference in my small part of the world.”

Richard has been involved in philanthropy since he was a teen and credits his mother with teaching him how to get things done. At 19, he raised money to send a local gymnast to the Olympics.

Before joining PAF, he was on the board of the Trevor Project for seven years and helped grow their annual budget from $600,000 to $6 million. He was also a top fundraiser for APLA’s AIDS marathon.

Richard believes in conspiracy theories — of the best kind. “If you have a goal, the universe conspires to help make it happen.” Since joining PAF in 2015, Richard has definitely made things happen!

Under his leadership, PAF was able to raise enough money to build a rainy day fund that helped tremendously when COVID-19 hit. Without their usual kitchen volunteers, they hired out-of-work chefs to help prepare their client meals.

Richard, of course, credits the success of PAF to the committed staff, visionary board, thousands of volunteers, and donors large and small, but we know the power of a when we see it.

What happens when you mix engineering, technology, inspiration and bright young minds? You get Black Girls CODE, founded by this month’s , Kimberly Bryant.

Kimberly Bryant created Black Girls Code to change the face of technology by introducing young girls of color to the field of computer science.

Kimberly has been nationally recognized as a thought leader and has received numerous awards for her work, including the prestigious Jefferson Award for Community Service in the Bay Area and an Ingenuity Award in Social Progress from the Smithsonian Institute. In 2013, Business Insider named her one of “The 25 Most Influential African-Americans in Technology.”

In 2019, Kimberly took the stage at TedX San Francisco and shared her journey to becoming an engineer and what it means for young women of color to have a safe space to fail while on their way to success. “The risk of failure is not evenly, let alone equitably, distributed. For many black girls, one failure can be the end of her journey.”

The mission of Black Girls Code is to introduce programming and technology to a new generation of coders who will become builders of technological innovation and of their own futures. And Kimberly insists, “You can absolutely be what you can’t see! That’s what innovators and disruptors do.”

Don’t let the inflatable unicorn head fool you. Vu Le (“voo lay”) — the OG — takes his nonprofit work very seriously.

Vu is the founder and former executive director of RVC (Rainier Valley Corps), a capacity building organization focused on supporting leaders and organizations of color.

Vu has delivered over 100 keynote speeches and was selected as one of the 2019 Nonprofit Times Power and Influence Top 50 and was one of the Chronicle of Philanthropy’s 40 Under 40 in 2016.

Well known for his no-BS approach, irreverent sense of humor and, of course, his love of unicorns, Vu knows that we should take the work seriously, but not ourselves. Go to NonprofitAF.com (formerly nonprofitswithballs.com) where he writes seriously good content about what’s going on in the nonprofit world.

Vu has been very vocal about the need to fund nonprofits led by people of color and how this will help to fight systemic injustice. He also passionately believes that funders often focus on the wrong things and says that “accountability should be about the outcomes: Are we actually helping people? Do they say that their lives are being changed?”

Vu is an accomplished writer and speaker and is well versed in a variety of subjects including funding dynamics, cultural competency, self-care, unicorns (of course!) and what Star Trek can teach us about the nonprofit field. (Fun fact: Vu was actually the inspiration for the creation of Unicorn Spotlight. Hopefully, we're making him proud — or at the very least, not pi***ng him off. No one likes an angry 🦄.)

His posts can sometimes be edgy, but that’s only because they’re honest and straightforward — something that is much needed in a world that is content to maintain the status quo.

The world would be a much better place if we had more like Vu Le.

Our culture is awash in superhero mythology, but there are real-life superheroes walking among us — like Alicia Garza.

As a nonprofit and social justice leader, she may disagree with that label because as she says “We have to stop treating leaders like superheroes. We are ordinary people attempting to do extraordinary things.”

Alicia Garza is an Oakland-based organizer, writer, and speaker who is currently the Special Projects Director for the National Domestic Workers Alliance — the nation’s leading voice for dignity and fairness for the millions of domestic workers in the United States.

As a q***r Black woman, Alicia’s leadership and work challenge traditional notions of race, gender, identity, and sexual orientation.

Alicia is also co-founder — along with Patrisse Cullors and Opal Tometi — of the Black Lives Matter Global Network whose mission is to foster connections between Black people and their allies in the fight against anti-Black racism, spark dialogue, and encourage social action and engagement.

“We are clear that all lives matter, but we live in a world where that's not actually happening in practice. So if we want to get to the place where all lives matter, then we have to make sure that Black lives matter, too.”

Alicia has become a powerful and respected voice in the media and has been featured in Time, The Guardian, Essence, Rolling Stone, and The New York Times. Her voice is one worth listening to.

Today is and since we could all use a little more magic these days, it's only fitting we honor a truly badass .

Cristina Gallegos, the founder and CEO of Skylarx, has spent over 17 years as an advisor to philanthropists and nonprofits. Each year, Cristina allocates a large percentage of her time to pro bono work and donates a significant portion of the profits from Skylarx.

Cristina is also the director of programs at the Greater Good Society where they offer a 1-year Fellowship program —partially supported by grant funding — for a select group of leaders creating social impact. The Fellowship provides motivation and accountability, a space for growth, mentoring, know-how and elements of management consulting.

Cristina knows that, “The job of leadership today is to see things that others don’t see. That’s my job and I am darn good at it.” We couldn’t agree more!

Her confidence can be attributed to her unique life experience as well as her vast body of work in both the for-profit and nonprofit worlds.

She was born in communist Romania and started her first business — when having a business was illegal — at the age of 18. Cristina immigrated to the US with just $64 in her pocket and a belief in the power of the American Dream. She’s a rebel AND a visionary.

Today, Cristina lives in Los Angeles and travels the world to share both her passion and vision for creating positive global change.

She is a skilled facilitator and strategist. Brilliant ideas come to her at warp speed and it can be a challenge just to keep up with her. She is always in motion and constantly evolving to keep up with the changing pace of the world. As a guest speaker at two of her Fellowship cohorts, I’ve been able to witness her magic firsthand.

Cristina thinks big, but also knows it’s important to start small. “Being a change agent is always a layered process for it involves change at individual level, change at organizational level, and change at the systemic level. Attaching systems is HARD; personal transformation is easier (not easy, but easier), so start with the individual.”

But thinking small is something that Cristina would never be accused of doing.

Her brilliance and kindness are unmatched and it is an honor to know this extraordinary . There is no doubt she will continue to share her magic with the world and create true positive global change.

We are living through extraordinary times and doing things we never imagined we’d have to do. (Toilet paper rationing, anyone?)

Here at Cause Farm, we’re choosing to focus on all of the good things happening in the world right now. Neighbors singing together from their balconies; doctors and nurses working tirelessly on our behalf; musicians performing free concerts from their living rooms; the generosity and creativity of grassroots fundraising campaigns; and the many nonprofits reinventing themselves and how they serve others during these challenging times. ❤️ We are proud to be a part of your community — even when we’re by ourselves.
