Hong Kong leads the world with debt at 380% of GDP, with Japan second at 372% and Singapore third at 347%. China is number 6, South Korea is number 8, Malaysia is number 10, Thailand is number 11, India is number 20, Vietnam is number 21, and Laos is number 41 in the world.

Government debt-to-GDP ratios in the Asia-Pacific range across the spectrum, no different from other parts of the world. Japan remains the world’s most indebted nation at 230% of GDP, with Singapore third at 176%. The U.S. is 11th at 125%, China 24th at 96%, and Laos, an oft-cited cautionary tale on debt, ranks a modest 31st at 91%. On the other extreme, Asia-Pacific countries with some of the world's lowest levels of government debt include Brunei, Taiwan, Timor-Leste, and many Pacific Island Countries.
