Whew!

Well. That was a nice little break from some of our favorite social platforms, wasn't it? I especially enjoyed Twitter's reaction (and IG's response). 😜

If there was ever an example of why it's important to create a website so you can own your content, this was it! 🤓

🗣 Heads up! 🗣

If you or your clients are using an older device (including gaming stations or smart TVs), and you can no longer access the internet, this could be the reason why!

A digital certificate by Lets Encrypt—that was widely used in electronic devices prior to 2017—expired yesterday (September 30th).

Here's a short (not all-inclusive) list of some of the systems/devices/platforms that might have been affected:

Windows XP SP3 and earlier
macOS v10.12.1 and earlier
iOS 10 and earlier (iPhone 5 is the oldest model capable of operating iOS 10)
Android v7.1.1 and earlier
Mozilla Firefox pre-v50
Java 8 v8u141 and earlier
Java 7 v7u151 and earlier
OpenSSL, version 1.0.2 and earlier
Amazon FireOS (Silk web browser)
Kindle v3.4.1 and earlier
Blackberry v10.3.3 and earlier
PlayStation 4 with firmware v5.00 and earlier
IIS

One reason I love WordPress is that it's extremely versatile and can grow with your business. With nearly 60,000 plugins available, you can do almost anything with it!

But what if you're an entrepreneur who's just getting started? Maybe you just need a virtual "home" for your business, without any fancy ecommerce capability or membership areas. Where do you begin?

Here are four plugins that I recommend for ANY website (yes, even yours), and—bonus!—they're all free. 😎

1️⃣ Wordfence

This is a security plugin that scans your website for vulnerabilities and malware. You can set it up to run daily and it will send you email notifications for a variety of risk levels (from low to critical). It also sends a weekly report summarizing the number of attacks and login attempts.

2️⃣ UpdraftPlus

UpdraftPlus takes a backup of your website on a scheduled basis, and allows you to restore previous versions if something goes wrong with your website. Your backups can be stored on your server or offsite (offsite is always recommended). You always want to take a backup before you update any themes, plugins, or core files, and UpdraftPlus makes it easy to do that.

3️⃣ WP Super Cache

This plugin can help speed up your website by creating a static version of your page and showing it to people who visit your site. Caching plugins are a necessary evil, because although speed is super important, things can get a little wonky sometimes when you use them. This is by far the most user-friendly one that I've found, though!

4️⃣ WPS Hide Login

This plugin creates a custom login page for your WordPress site. Normally when you log into WordPress, you access your login page by going to "wp-login", for example, "www.yourawesomesite. com/wp-login". Scammers have bots that crawl websites and search specifically for this login page, and try to guess at what your login credentials may be. By creating a custom login page, they won't be able to find your website this way. You can also do this using custom code, but this plugin makes it super quick and easy for anyone—no coding required.

So there you have it! Four must-have plugins for any website, no matter how new you are to the world of WordPress.

The Revolution Demo website features a unique layout and minimal design that provides the perfect canvas for showcasing photography and text.

(And I have to admit...I kind of dig the flip box customization I added to the portfolio section!) 😍

𝟒 𝐑𝐞𝐚𝐬𝐨𝐧𝐬 𝐖𝐡𝐲 𝐘𝐨𝐮𝐫 𝐁𝐮𝐬𝐢𝐧𝐞𝐬𝐬 𝐒𝐭𝐢𝐥𝐥 𝐍𝐞𝐞𝐝𝐬 𝐚 𝐖𝐞𝐛𝐬𝐢𝐭𝐞

There's been a lot of talk about how websites are old school and funnels are where it's at. And don't get me wrong—funnels can be awesome for your business! But they are just one piece of the marketing puzzle. Businesses still need a website, and here are a few reasons why:

1️⃣ It's the perfect way to build your brand.

A blog is a great way to provide value to your audience without asking for the sale. People want to know the brands they buy from, and you can't do that with a sales funnel.

2️⃣ It will help you stay competitive.

How many times have you chosen a business simply because a competitor didn't have a website (and required you to *call them* to get information?!?)

3️⃣ You'll rank higher on organic searches.

SEO and organic search ranking are the factors that are used to measure how well a website ranks in Google’s search engine.
One of the most important factors for SEO or organic search ranking is a website, hands down.

4️⃣ The cost of NOT having a website is too high.

Every business needs to have a website or they risk losing out on potential clients. With more and more people turning to the internet for all of their information needs, not having an online presence means that your company is unable to reach these new customers.

It's out!! WordPress 5.8 is here, and it's ready to be updated in your dashboard.

BUT....

You might want to hold off. 😳

I know, I know...I went on and on about how important it is to keep everything updated, so what's the deal??

Well...it IS important to keep everything updated, especially if there's a security concern. But sometimes with certain updates, it's better to wait a week and see what happens.

This version of WordPress has a LOT of changes...but none of them are related to security or any other vulnerabilities. This is GOOD news! It means you can hold off and see what happens when other people update their sites. Let THEM be the guinea pig.

(But don't tell them I told you!) 😉

This will give developers time to fix any bugs that may have been exposed during the release, and will minimize issues with your website.

I plan on running my updates on Monday as usual, unless I see something crazy that makes me feel like I should hold off. And, as always, I'll be taking a full backup before hitting the "update" button (and you should, too!)

How about you—have you jumped in already? Have you had any issues, or was it smooth sailing?? I'd love to hear from you!

📣📣 Heads up that if you have WooCommerce or WooCommerce Blocks installed on your website, you'll want to update ASAP! Remember to back up your website first, and check out my earlier post about website maintenance for more tips. ;-)

On July 13 2021, a critical vulnerability was identified in WooCommerce. Learn more about what this means and how it was resolved.
