It's been a week since the Top 50 Gastropub awards, so a good time to reflect on them.

We are delighted that quite a number of our clients made it into the list this year and are very proud of the work we do with them.

It's been a difficult few years in hospitality, and remaining focused on the ever changing landscape is key for us.

Despite all of those challenges, having spent more than 20 years overcoming them for our pub, restaurant and hotel clients, we are very confident in the future.

AI is a useful tool, but ultimately people still buy from people.

Hospitality marketing isn't just about content, it's about building relationships with customers and encouraging them to come back time and time again.

That's what we do. 😀

Good luck to all our clients who are attending the UK Top 50 Gastropubs awards today.

It's a very exciting day in the gastropub industry, particularly as the hospitality sector has had more challenges to face than pretty much any other in recent years.

We are very proud of the work we do to support these amazing businesses.

Have a great day! 🥂

When I started the business back in 2005, who would have thought that 20 years later, we would still be here, thriving and going forward?

We have been incredibly fortunate to be able to support hundreds of wonderful independent businesses during that time, including some well known household names.

Thanks to all of them for trusting us to contribute to shaping their own successes.

Our methodology is very much the same as it was back in 2005, and despite huge technological advances since then, humans, who are *all* of our customers, don't change that much.

Incredibly, some of our clients have been working with us for much of that 20 years, and we are looking forward to the next 20 with them too.

If our clients are still thriving decades later, despite the challenges of Brexit, the pandemic, cost of living crises and lots of others, I guess we must have some secrets that are worth sharing. 😉

Maybe in 2026 we can share those secrets with you too. 📈

Our great friends at also celebrated their 40th anniversary this year, so we had a joint party. Here's a look back at that and also a picture of our first office back in 2005.

It really does feel like yesterday!

Upward and onward.

It was an amazing January for our team, with four of our clients picking up Top 50 Gastropubs awards, which was fantastic news.

The Unruly Pig was awarded number one Gastropub in the UK for the third time since we have been working together with Brendan, Dave, Karl and the team.

Congratulations to everyone and we look forward to another busy year as a result. It's a real privilege to work with these amazing businesses.

Anyone else who thinks their pub or restaurant could do with a fresh marketing approach or a new strategy in 2025, particularly as many of the larger groups are forecasting growth and expanding, let us know.

There are lots of opportunities for growth in 2025 with the right marketing!

We can chat through ideas about how we can make 2025 better than ever. 😊

We've been working together with David and the Pied à Terre team for over 6 years now.

When you include a global pandemic, a cost of living crisis, high inflation and all the other challenges we've faced together during that time, it feels like a lot longer.

That also tells you how significant an achievement it is to still be a dominant force in the London dining scene after 33 years. It's definitely not an accident!

Congratulations to all of the team. Delighted to be part of the journey and the story.

It's a truly remarkable achievement.

Working with Brendan, Dave, Karl, Jackie and the Unruly team for the last few years, has been really rewarding.

With an array of awards during that time, including GQ Best Pub, the National Restaurant Awards, Taste of England, Sunday Times, Daily Telegraph, and BBC Food, I'm not sure how many more there are left to win to be honest.

Returning to number one in the Top 50 Gastropubs is a tremendous accolade, but only a small part of the huge amount of work that goes into being the best out there, so congratulations to all of the team and who knows what 2024 might bring!

Let us know if you want to look at how your gastropub or restaurant might benefit from some of our decades of experience.

It's always great to chat about where you think you might be headed next and we can support you with that.

We are thrilled to extend our warmest congratulations to David, Asimakis, and the entire team at Pied à Terre on their outstanding achievement of retaining a Michelin Star for a 30th consecutive year.

At Venue Marketing, we are proud to have been a part of this remarkable journey, collaborating with the team for the past four years to develop and execute innovative marketing strategies that showcase their unique cuisine and exceptional talent to both new and returning customers.

This milestone is a true testament to the unwavering dedication and team effort of the Pied à Terre staff, and we are honored to have played a role in their success.

We look forward to continuing our partnership with this iconic restaurant and supporting their continued growth and success in the future.

As we reach then end of 2022, it's been a mixed bag for most hospitality businesses. For many, the pandemic recovery has been a combination of staffing challenges and adapting to new realities in the sector. It's also been a bumper year for many, as people re-emerged after being limited for a couple of years.

It's definitely been a year of uncertainty with war, inflation, energy shocks and a cost of living crisis.

In some ways, it might sound crazy, but we have certainty about 2023 in many ways - because we already KNOW this is going to continue for at least another 12 months.

That's good in some ways - becuse it means we can plan for it and we can figure out how our clients can not only survive but thrive, because there are always winners in recessions.

And it's almost always those who have the best marketing plans and activity.

It's time to be truly competitive again and that means winning customers and keeping them from going elsewhere. It's going to be a real fight because there isn't enough money out there for everyone to survive.

Although there has been some Government support to reduce future energy costs, many independent hospitality venues are still facing large hikes in costs across the board. For many, that is still an unsustainable increase in costs.

But what can we do about it?

There are a number of potential changes you can make, but most of these will involve either raising prices or reducing costs. The challenge with that approach is that it's very difficult to sustain or grow a business by either of those. As one pub landlord put it last week - "We will simply go bankrupt more slowly, rather than next month."

If we raise prices, there is a risk that our customers stop visiting - as they are facing their own cost of living crises at the same time.

If we reduce costs, by, for example, closing more frequently or by having fewer staff, the business might suffer as a result and customers no longer want to visit.

The only other way is to increase the number of customers we have, which in turn increases our turnover and reduces the proportion of energy within our fixed costs.

Unfortunately, this is where the Government support really favours larger chains and groups - because they have entire strategic, finance and marketing teams who will be ramping up activity to make that happen. In fact, it's already started.

Our team also do some of this, but for independent pubs and restaurants - and this is what you are going to need in the coming months. We can't help everyone, though we are happy to discuss ideas with you to see what might work best in your own unique situation. Just DM us - you have nothing to lose.
