Quick Sunday thought on Design:
————
So I’m reading up on typography in a create.adobe.com blog entry and it reminded me of a design rule that I was taught in Design school. That rule is: Don’t combine more than 3 typefaces in design. But then you have these old school art pieces that worked even though they seemed to throw all the typefaces onto one flyer.
I like to think of that phenomenon as the rule of extremes, for example, if in a design you want to cause contrast between sections you have elements of the bottom section conflict with the upper section by having it cross that invisible (sometimes visible) grid boundary. If you however have the two elements slightly conflicting it looks like a bad mistake, but if you have it really conflict and make those crossing elements noticeable it can take your design to another level.
The same rules seem to apply to typography in the instance. I would also not advocate to use more than 3 typefaces in a design, but if you’re going to put that rule aside, then REALLY really break it and go wild with a purposeful approach.
