Quick Sunday thought on Design:
————
So I’m reading up on typography in a create.adobe.com blog entry and it reminded me of a design rule that I was taught in Design school. That rule is: Don’t combine more than 3 typefaces in design. But then you have these old school art pieces that worked even though they seemed to throw all the typefaces onto one flyer.

I like to think of that phenomenon as the rule of extremes, for example, if in a design you want to cause contrast between sections you have elements of the bottom section conflict with the upper section by having it cross that invisible (sometimes visible) grid boundary. If you however have the two elements slightly conflicting it looks like a bad mistake, but if you have it really conflict and make those crossing elements noticeable it can take your design to another level.

The same rules seem to apply to typography in the instance. I would also not advocate to use more than 3 typefaces in a design, but if you’re going to put that rule aside, then REALLY really break it and go wild with a purposeful approach.

I do like it when a plan starts coming together. Always worth planning out a journey ahead of time, even though sometimes you may veer off the path for a second that's what makes it worth traveling.

Here’s the mentality I started to use when designing for smaller screens and everyone should really think mobile first when starting any web design project.

Start by taking yourself away from the web mindset and think of designing your website like a mobile app. This has recently helped me in my mobile designs, because I give the design my undivided attention instead of trying to make the big version squeeze into the smaller one.

In reality, you have to create three unique designs to fully optimize the space you have to work with: Mobile, Tablet, Desktop.

When growing a business you need to be aware and know the concepts of everything you're offering.

You don't need to be an expert, but at least speak the same language of all your outside contractors. You make their lives easier of what can and can't be accomplished while getting your client the desired results.

I've had some bad and good experiences with what I offered in the past, but you need to be continually learning and improving. Requires hard work and implementing the correct fail-safes for future work.

Even though I know how to use, implement, install and create WordPress/Woocommerce e-commerce stores; I think it's best to start out with a controlled, automatically updated solution like Shopify when first dipping your toes in the e-commerce world.

Once you start outgrowing the features on sites like Shopify then look into getting a developer to custom make you a solution on WordPress and maintain it for you, very important. It's definitely not a set it and forget it type of system.

Since Shopify is not an open source system like WordPress, it is a paid solution but for not worrying about maintenance and just doing what you do best, selling your product. I think it's worth the price of admission.

WordPress and Woocommerce are indeed powerful but if getting into the technical aspects of the system presents more of a headache for you, then definitely start off managing Shopify.

Which ever system you decide to go for and have something awesome to sell, product or service, let's talk. Together we can come up with a plan of action and choose the right system for your products and company.

Honestly, the simplest things you do to a website can prove to be the most valuable.

- Index the site and send the sitemap to Google and Bing. Let the crawlers, crawl.

- Optimize speed, by utilizing a CDN and using an image optimization solution. Literally, every second counts.

- Make it mobile friendly, even if it means creating a different experience for different devices.

- Guide the user to your end goal without adding any superfluous obstacles that get in between them and your end goal.

A happy user is a returning user.

When I have to convince companies the power of UX design, I just ask one simple question. How are you converting customers?

If you're not making money or getting interest in your content, you're literally throwing money away. Why have a beautiful website, when you can't generate business off of it?

Nobody wants to be underwater on an investment.

Success can be defined in so many different ways! You don't need to have the big corner office, away from the heart of the company. You don't need to be extremely rich to get you even further away from that connection to your target demographic.

But you do need to provide customers that sense of connection to your company, they're not just another random individual buying a SKU, they need to know that their voice is heard and you take their suggestions seriously. They become advocates for your brand and spread the word to their social group who might have similar purchasing behavior. Try converting 1 customer to 5!

A quick hit: When selling a product or service to someone, you're actually selling the benefits of it. It could be a cool, even the best product, but you need to let the customer know how it will make their life better, easier. How will this product/service allow them to make one less decision in their busy lives?

A Business-Consumer relationship requires trust.

You're asking a complete stranger to trust you with their financial information, because you provide a product or service that at that point in time will make their life more enjoyable or practical.

It's not an easy transaction, so make it as easy for the consumer to understand what exactly they are getting in return from that transaction and how you can make them feel secure enough to follow through with it.

You need to gain and follow up with confidence by strengthening your purchasing system, don't just "say" it, do it and prove it to them. You'll gain a customer for life.
