Symptoms of Irlen Syndrome are exacerbated by certain situations - bright and fluorescent lighting, high contrast visual stimuli, and demands for sustained visual attention. This makes reading the perfect pressure cooker and is the reason why so many people with Irlen Syndrome find their reading is affected by the condition. Irlen Syndrome isn't a reading disability, and lots of people with Irlen Syndrome are excellent readers, but this doesn't mean that reading isn't made more difficult than it should be. Irlen Syndrome can make reading less comfortable (causing eye strain and headaches), less efficient (if you have to constantly take breaks), and more labor-intensive (when you have to work harder to achieve the same result as someone without Irlen Syndrome). If words move on the page or the white background is uncomfortably bright, you're probably working harder than you have to in order to read the words on the page. We can help.
