Seeing my cousin Zubin, being challenged with MS and thankfully acheiving some stability in his prognosis, has been something my whole family - The Z Squad, has been so grateful for!

But there are too many Canadians suffering from the debilitating effects MS as the disease progresses who need our help.

I’m taking the challenge to help MS Canada fund research, advocate for change, and help people with MS and their families. Proceeds will support those living with this disease and their families and caregivers. They also fund research with three primary goals: to find a cause and cure for MS, repair nervous system damage caused by MS and stop MS attacks.

By supporting me, you too can make a difference in the life of someone with MS. I promise to smash my KM goals, not just for Zubin, but for everyone with MS who fights everyday.

On December 6, 1989, I was a 2nd year student at UTM. I was in the library studying when I heard that an armed gunman entered an engineering classroom at Ecole Polytechnique in Montreal, Quebec. He demanded all 48 men in the class leave the room, lined up all 9 women against a wall, and, shouting "You are all a bunch of [expletive] feminists!", proceeded to shoot them. He went into the hall and shot 18 more people, mostly at random. He finally shot himself.

He had killed 14 women all together, and injured 9 more women and 4 men.

They were killed because they were women.

Genevieve Bergeron, 21, was a 2nd year scholarship student in civil engineering.
Helene Colgan, 23, was in her final year of mechanical engineering and planned to take her master's degree.
Nathalie Croteau, 23, was in her final year of mechanical engineering.
Barbara Daigneault, 22, was in her final year of mechanical engineering and was a teaching assistant.
Anne-Marie Edward, 21, was a first year student in chemical engineering.
Maud Haviernick, 29, was a 2nd year student in engineering materials, and a graduate in environmental design.
Barbara Maria Klucznik, 31, was a 2nd year engineering student specializing in engineering materials.
Maryse Laganiere, 25, worked in the budget department of the Polytechnique.
Maryse Leclair, 23, was a 4th year student in engineering materials.
Anne-Marie Lemay, 27, was a 4th year student in mechanical engineering.
Sonia Pelletier, 28, was to graduate the next day in mechanical engineering. She was awarded a degree posthumously.
Michele Richard, 21, was a 2nd year student in engineering materials.
Annie St-Arneault, 23, was a mechanical engineering student.
Annie Turcotte, 21, was a first year student in engineering materials.

As the year comes to a close, remember that goals are not dictated by a new calendar. Dates do not determine dreams. The journey is as long as it needs to be. You don't have to wait for a new year, month, or week to start afresh; all you need is a new day and a new mindset. Each day presents a new opportunity for a new beginning.
