Gerry is a retired National Park Service and Bureau of Land Management Ranger. He specialized in law enforcement, search and rescue, emergency medicine, safety management, and structural and wildland fire protection. He was fortunate to live and work in many beautiful National Parks, including Denali National Park, Alaska; Yosemite and Sequoia & Kings Canyon, California; Grand Canyon, Arizona; and Yellowstone National Park, Wyoming. He has more than 30 years experience as a professional photographer, specializing in wildlife photography, nature photography, travel photography, stock photography, advertising, and photojournalism. 𝗜𝗳 𝗮 𝗯𝗲𝗮𝗿 𝗵𝘂𝗳𝗳𝘀 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗽𝘂𝗳𝗳𝘀… 𝗶𝘁’𝘀 𝗻𝗼𝘁 𝗯𝗹𝘂𝗳𝗳𝗶𝗻𝗴 🐻

A bluff is defined as an attempt to deceive someone about intentions or ability. When we talk about bear behavior, we often use the term “bluff charge,” but it can be misleading.

A charge can go two ways. A bear may make contact and maul, or it may veer off at the last second, running past. We call that second type a bluff charge, but there is no bluff about it. It’s a show of strength meant to intimidate.

Bears aren’t trying to trick you. When they huff, slap the ground, pop their jaws, or charge, they’re saying one thing loud and clear: 𝙗𝙖𝙘𝙠 𝙤𝙛𝙛!

That’s why distance is your best move. Stay at least 100 yards away and give bears plenty of space. Never approach, crowd, or provoke wildlife.

𝗕𝗲𝗮𝗿 𝘀𝗮𝗳𝗲𝘁𝘆 𝗯𝗮𝘀𝗶𝗰𝘀:
🐻 See a bear from the road? Stay in your vehicle and drive by slowly
📸 Want a photo? Park safely and stay 100 yards back, even when inside your car
🥾 On the trail, make noise, especially when you can’t see far ahead
💨 Carry bear spray, but save it for real danger, not just because you see a bear
🍎 At camp or the lakeshore, store all food, drinks, and scented items in a locked vehicle or bear box
