Yesterday marked the 27th anniversary of South Africa's first non-racial election of 1994. A day that honours and pays homage to the country's liberation from the Apartheid ruling.

There is still a lot of work ahead. As for some South African's this day means that all the gains, aspirations and hopes that were promised as the country transformed into a democratic and free society have been lost.

This is a lifetime journey for every South African.

World Autism Awareness Day is observed on 2 April. This year 13th World Autism Awareness Day is celebrated. It aims to raise awareness about autism and to educate people about it.

This year’s observance takes place in the midst of a public health crisis unlike any other in our lifetimes — a crisis that places persons with autism at disproportionate risk as a result of the coronavirus and its impact on society.

Persons with autism have the right to self-determination, independence and autonomy, as well as the right to education and employment on an equal basis with others. But the breakdown of vital support systems and networks as a result of COVID-19 exacerbates the obstacles that persons with autism face in exercising these rights. We must ensure that a prolonged disruption caused by the emergency does not result in rollbacks of the rights that persons with autism and their representative organizations have worked so hard to advance.

Good Friday is an important occasion for the Christian community around the world, for it marks the crucifixion of Jesus Christ at Calvary, a site just outside of Jerusalem. It is observed during the holy week as part of the ‘Paschal Triduum’ on the Friday preceding Easter Sunday. Good Friday is also known as ‘Holy Friday’, ‘Great Friday’, ‘Great and Holy Friday’, and ‘Black Friday’. This year, it falls on April 2.

It should be noted that the Good Friday date varies every year on both the modern-day Gregorian as well as the Julian calendars.

On this day, members of many Christian denominations, like Catholic, Eastern Orthodox, Lutheran, Anglican, Methodist, Oriental Orthodox and Reformed traditions attend church services and observe fasts. In many countries, it is regarded as a holiday.

Human Rights Day in South Africa is historically linked with 21 March 1960, and the events of Sharpeville. On that day 69 people died and 180 were wounded when police fired on a peaceful crowd that had gathered in protest against the Pass laws.

We at Emphis Strate are commemorating Human Rights Day almost exactly a year since the coronavirus pandemic was declared a national disaster in our country and we prepared for a nationwide lockdown to contain its spread.

We have had to sacrifice things that are important to us, like meeting and socialising, travelling freely, attending funerals of our loved ones and being at cultural gatherings and attending religious services. And yet over the passage of time, we have shown our resilience as a people.

We have shown our determination to defeat a pandemic that is still very much with us.We have done so with great courage and resolve.

Our unity as a nation has been our greatest strength.
