A Nation's Birth: From Risk to Revolution
by Joel Hawksley

On July the fourth, we celebrate,
But July the second marked the fate,
When Congress voiced in fervent tone,
The colonies would stand alone.

Yet slow the news from Philly went,
Through Boston's streets, the message sent,
And debates in Congress did prolong,
The signing of our freedom song.

John Adams thought July the second,
Would be the day that history reckoned,
But time and talk made the Fourth the date,
For fireworks and festive state.

But behind this joyous celebration,
Lies the tale of our young nation,
Moments when our freedom's thread,
Hung by a hair, by courage led.

Echoes in the Hollow: A Lament of PTSD
By Joel Hawksley

In the hollow chambers of the soul, where shadows twist and linger,
Among the fragments of time, broken and disjointed, there lies a wound,
A wound festering in the silent hours, echoing through the corridors
Of memory, a stark and relentless reminder of battles unseen.

We are the hollow men, in the valley of desolation,
Where each thought, each breath, is tinged with the residue of dread,
For in the night, the past whispers, haunting, spectral,
Drawing us into the vortex of our own despair.

Time present and time past,
Are both perhaps present in time future,
And the echoes of our torment stretch across the unseen abyss,
Where the wheel of suffering turns unceasingly, grinding hope to dust.

I have measured out my life with coffee spoons,
Yet each spoonful, each sip, is laced with the bitter taste of anguish,
The inescapable drone of remembered fear,
As the shadows stretch long and dark, consuming the light.

Between the idea and the reality, between the motion and the act,
Falls the Shadow, casting a pall over the fleeting moments of peace,
And in the stillness, in the dead of night,
We confront the ghosts of what was, what could have been.

This is the way the world ends,
Not with a bang but a whimper,
A whimper of the soul, exhausted by the relentless barrage of phantoms,
Seeking solace, yet finding only the hollow resonance of silence.

O dark night of the soul, in the interstices of our being,
Where the fragments of our lives lay scattered,
Let us find some fragment of peace, some whisper of redemption,
In the broken symphony of our existence.

Memorial Day: Memories Etched in Hearts
by Joel Hawksley

Memories echo, etched in hearts forever strong,
Echoes of laughter, whispers of courage in their song.

Oh, the valiant spirits, soaring on wings of light,
Having paid the ultimate price, defending what is right.

In hallowed grounds they slumber, beneath a watchful sky,
Ever remembered, their sacrifices never die.

Let freedom's anthem rise, a tribute to their soul,
A promise whispered softly, "Their stories will be told."

# # Trying Something New: Cento Poetry!

Hey everyone, I'm diving into a new poetic style called **cento**. It's where you create a brand new poem entirely from lines of existing poems by other authors!

For example, I took lines from famous poems about the sea to craft a new piece titled "The Call of the Sea." Check it out!

**The Call of the Sea**
Cento Poem
by Joel Hawksley

The sea is calling me, I must go forth,
And lose myself in the vastness of the blue.

The salty spray whispers secrets untold,
Beckoning me with a siren's sweet song.

My heart longs for adventure on the open main,
To chart unknown waters, where dreams take flight.

Oh, to break free from the shore and ride the waves,
Embrace the mystery of the endless night.

(Sources.)

"The Seafarer" by Anglo-Saxon poet
"Ode: Intimations of Immortality" by William Wordsworth
“The Rime of the Ancient Mariner" by Samuel Taylor Coleridge
"Ulysses" by Alfred Lord Tennyson
"The Odyssey" by Homer
"Invictus" by William Ernest Henley
"A Shropshire Lad" by A. E. Housman
"Dover Beach" by Matthew Arnold

Each line is attributed to the original author below the poem, letting you see how the different voices come together to create something fresh.

I'm excited to experiment with this style and see what kind of poems I can create. What themes or topics would you like to see explored in a cento? Let me know in the comments!

Steel gaze, unwavering stride,
For freedom's cause, they take the tide.
Silent courage, hearts aflame,
We honor those who bear the name.

Resurrection
The Dawn of Redemption
by Joel Hawksley

In echoes of dawn, a whisper takes flight,
"He is not here, bathed in morning's light."
The tomb stands silent, a stone rolled away,
No slumber holds him, a truth for the day.

Remember his words, a promise untold,
In Galilee's whispers, a story unfolds.
The weight of the world, a burden to bear,
Suffering's embrace, a victory to share.

Hands outstretched, a message so clear,
Not captive to darkness, nor conquered by fear.
A third day's rising, a dawning anew,
Life's broken chains, forever born true.

The weekend's echo, a digital hum,
Sunday's silence, a new day begun.
But whispers trend, a rumor takes flight,
A broken tomb bathed in morning light.

, a hashtag ignites,
Across the web, a wildfire ignites.
Skeptics scoff, with a doubting reply,
But hearts click "like" with a tear in their eye.

No longer a story, on dusty old scrolls,
A message retweets, reaching hungry souls.
The stone rolled away, a metaphor clear,
Hope's resurrection, banishing fear.

Once just pixels on a glowing screen,
Faith finds its followers, a vibrant unseen.
From whispers to shouts, a digital choir,
The greatest comeback, setting hearts on fire.

So don't be afraid, though shadows may creep,
Love's the download, you just need to leap.
For even in darkness, a truth can ignite,
A message of hope, bathed in digital light.

Grace
The Gift of Renewal
by Joel Hawksley

By grace untold, a gift freely given,
A hope reborn, a spirit newly driven.
Not kings or prophets, but hearts that aspire,
Set alight by faith, a soul set on fire.

No grand cathedral, no temple of stone,
But the human vessel, where kindness is sown.
The burdens we carry, may sometimes feel vast,
But mercy's embrace, forever holds fast.

From doubt's chilling whispers, to sorrow's deep well,
A promise arises, a story to tell.
Like seeds in the darkness, with patient refrain,
Hope's tender shoots rise, through sun and through rain.

For we are reborn, not flesh and not bone,
But in spirit renewed, a place we can call home.
A home built on love, a refuge from fear,
Where hearts find their anchor, and futures grow clear.

So let us rise up, with each dawning day,
Embrace the new life, that grace lights the way.
For in every breath, a potential untold,
A story unwritten, waiting to unfold.

The Echoing Question
By Joel Hawksley

The question hangs heavy, a pointed barb,
"If you could, why didn't you?" a cutting remark.
It stings with a truth, both harsh and unfair,
For action and power are a tangled pair.

Perhaps I saw struggle, but lacked the right hand,
To lift from the darkness, to make a firm stand.
Maybe the knowledge was absent, the key yet unseen,
Leaving me fumbling, caught in a helpless routine.

Or maybe, dear critic, the fault lies with you,
For not lending a hand, for not seeing things through.
Did you offer your strength, your voice in the fight?
Or simply observe, from a distance bathed in light?

The world's a vast canvas, with colors untold,
And action's a spectrum, bravery unfolds
In a million small gestures, a whisper, a smile,
The sum of these efforts, going the extra mile.

So judge not so harshly, the silent, unseen,
For action's a dance, where many convene.
Look within your own heart, let empathy bloom,
Extend a hand onward, dispel the room's gloom.

For together we rise, a chorus in song,
Where "if you could" transforms to a world where we're strong.
Let's bridge the divides, with compassion's embrace,
And turn "why didn't you?" into a powerful space.
