I saw someone sharing pics from a Polaroid ad and I instantly loved it. It’s the most an ad has hit me in a while.
Stay connected, small shop friends.
Reach out, say to hi someone. Check in. Leave a comment on someone’s page, group, post. Algorithm isn’t showing you who you want to see? Go search for them. Leave some comments and interact.
We sit back and wait for an algorithm to spoon feed us what we want and need to see. But as we’ve learned lately that can’t be relied on. Go find them. Make the connection yourself.
When I first started making art we didn’t even have social media to connect us. Social media has connected us now in ways that were never possible before. It’s made so many of our small shops possible. It’s a valuable tool. The algorithm is just a part of it and when it’s not doing what we want to do, we have to step up and be the humans behind the tools. Im realizing that relying solely on an algorithm to reach people isnt the best way to do things. When it works in our favor, great. But when can do things on our own to connect our small shops and ourselves to others.
Make posts for your people. Engage, connect and talk. Make your groups a valuable place to be, not just a sales-y feed of promo. Share someone else’s work that you appreciate.
Back in the day I had to work so much harder to reach people without social media. Its enabled me to quit the jobs that drained me, to do what I love. We can still make this work.
Don’t let a 💩 algorithm defeat you. We’re still here on social media, on this book of faces. It can still be used.
Great ad by Polaroid. Made me think this morning and I had to share it.
