Graphictional Design has been 'fallow' for the last few years as I've been holding down my university position - professor for Design English at a private university on the East Coast of South Korea. It's been both the best and worst job of my life: I loved being in the classroom and guiding hands-on project-based learning, design thinking, metacognition, and communicative skills. But, it turns out, those skills do not translate well to online classes and while my students were still loving what I was offering...I wasn't.

Tech-savvy as I am, with my classes fully digitized, a custom website and interactive schedule, recorded lessons interwoven with Zoom check-ins, and a personalized, private, Google Sheet portfolio for every student.... turns out I can't teach to a screen.. Or rather, I can, but I hate it. I need to be 'on the ground' and 'at the chalkface'. It was bad enough that I had a health crisis early in the fall semester, had to play catch-up for the next ten weeks, and gave notice. My health won't allow me to keep to the academic schedule, let alone in a global pandemic, so that part of my life is done, for now.

But my design skills are stronger than ever, my eye just as practiced, and I have a whole new set of ideas for this little solopreneurial adventure I named Graphictional Design so many years ago. I'm ready to plough some new ground and sow some fresh seeds. Let's see what will grow and flourish in 2021!

Any 'SIREN' fans out there? The TV show 'Siren' premiered in March of this year: alas, it's not broadcast in South Korea so I haven't had a chance to see if my hand-drawn anatomical diagrams ever showed up on screen, but it's more than time to do a little bragging about it.

I was contacted last summer by the producers, who tracked me down via my mer-art on the Santharian Dream and was happy to sketch up some detailed mermaid dissections as set dressing- a lot of research into both human and piscine anatomy, some creative merging of the two, and a lot of late nights with my Wacom tablet and Photoshop!
