The Illusion of Growth
A sudden surge in ranking keywords.
A sharp drop shortly after.
These charts came from two different businesses using AI-generated websites and mass-produced content from agencies claiming to understand SEO.
That is not sustainable SEO.
When an agency says, “We can create dozens of keyword landing pages at once,” the first question should be: What value does each page give the customer that the others do not?
Google’s scaled content abuse policy exists for a reason. Publishing large volumes of pages primarily to manipulate rankings, rather than help a real person, creates risk for the business paying the bill.
And content is not the only problem.
I have seen sites loaded with hidden or irrelevant outbound links to unrelated businesses. That can create a serious trust and spam issue. If an agency is using the same tactics across multiple client sites, the exposure is not limited to one website.
The pitch is usually the same: more pages, more keywords, faster growth.
Then the dashboard jumps.
The agency takes the screenshot.
And the rankings disappear.
Good SEO can move quickly when the work is focused. A useful page, a clear local intent, sound technical implementation, and content that actually answers the customer’s question can earn visibility faster than most people think.
If a business has 150 indexed pages and only one page-one keyword, it is time to ask harder questions:
Are the pages useful, or were they created just to target phrases?
Are the rankings tied to terms that generate calls and customers?
Is the agency reporting real business results, or only a temporary graph spike?
What happens when Google catches up to the content?
Sustainable visibility is earned by being useful, technically sound, and relevant to the person searching.
