When did speaking to an actual human being become too much to ask?

The other day, I called a friend’s business number and got the familiar automated response:
Press 1 for this.
Press 2 for that.
Press another number to continue down the path of trying to reach a person.

So, I called his cell phone instead.
I told him, “I tried to reach you at your office.”
He asked, “Did you get the phone tree?”
“Yes,” I said. “That is why I’m calling your cell phone. I don’t want to listen to prompts and press buttons. I wanted to talk to you.”

A couple of months ago, I tried to reach the owner of a small business that has provided a service for me for a long time. I was told that he no longer accepts phone calls.

No longer accepts phone calls? 🤔

I understand the need for efficiency. Technology can streamline communication and save time, but at what cost?

I believe not every interaction should be routed through a phone tree, a chatbot, a portal, or an automated email. Sometimes people simply want to speak with another person—especially when there is an established relationship.

Human interaction matters because people remember how we make them feel. They remember whether they felt valued or processed.

Technology should support connection, not replace it. Are we becoming so focused on convenience and efficiency that we are losing the human element of doing business?

Have you ever had a long-standing business relationship begin to feel less personal because you could no longer reach the person you had always communicated with directly?

Being well-prepared for an interview means doing more than reviewing the company website. The website gives you the view above the water, but it is not the whole picture. To really understand the company, you need to look beneath the surface.

Read the company’s blog and listen to its podcast if it has one. Review recent news, press releases, and LinkedIn posts. Look at what employees are sharing. Review similar job postings. Pay attention to the words the company uses, the problems it talks about, and the priorities that keep showing up.
You can also look at customer reviews, employee reviews, annual reports, industry trends, competitors, and the LinkedIn profiles of the people who may be interviewing you.

That deeper research can help you:
🌊 Prepare better questions for the interview
🌊 Identify challenges the employer may be facing
🌊 Connect your experience to the company’s needs
🌊 Explain why you are a strong fit

Interview preparation is about understanding the bigger picture. Before your next interview, go beneath the surface.

What is one source you check before an interview that others might overlook?

Career change can feel a lot like watching the front yard while the fog rolls in.
You know there’s a road ahead, but the full path isn’t clear yet.

Interviewing can feel the same way. You may wonder:
🔷 Am I explaining my experience clearly?
🔷 Will they understand how my skills transfer?
🔷 How do I convey that I am the right fit?

You don’t need to see the entire path before taking the next step. You need clarity on how to communicate your value.

Fog lifts gradually. So does career uncertainty.

Focused interview preparation and a clear career story can help you move forward with confidence.

If you are navigating a career change or preparing for interviews, let’s talk about bringing your next step into focus.

You never know who is paying attention.

It might be someone in a meeting, a colleague watching how you handle pressure, or a connection following your posts online.

In today’s world, we are often more visible than we realize. Our professionalism, attitude, communication, and kindness all leave an impression. Sometimes that impression opens a door we never expected.

Opportunities do not always come from job applications or interviews. Sometimes they come from how we treated someone when there was nothing obvious to gain, or from staying composed in a difficult moment. Sometimes they come from being the person others remember for the right reasons.

That is why how we show up matters.

Your next opportunity may come from someone who is already watching.
