We had planned to take the train up north to San Sebastián, but two weeks before our trip I realized that hardly any trains were running north because of an accident earlier this year. So we rented a car and stopped in Burgos to break up the trip.

It was a small, super peaceful city. We had lunch at a restaurant surrounded by locals and fans heading to the town soccer match, and then explored the Cathedral. We knew it was a UNESCO site and that El Cid is buried there, but the detail work inside was incredible! And we saw a piece of the True Cross.

As we drove north the plains turned into mountains before we arrived in San Sebastián.

Davey’s dad was waiting for us here and were having a blast exploring, eating pintxos, and seriously driving up our step count each day.

24 hours in Madrid. Our flight landed at 5am Madrid time and we rallied for a few hours but then all three boys fell asleep at the hotel restaurant 🫣

Thankfully our room was ready early and we took the most glorious 2 hour nap before exploring a bit, hitting the rooftop pool (it was nearly 100 out) and then attending Mass in a beautiful crypt.

When we left Charlotte, the woman who checked our bags asked if the boys had any idea where they were going. We understood what she meant. While they understand that they’re physically across the world from home, they still don’t quite understand the gravity of this experience 🤍

Last day of preschool for Bennett, grad parties, mahjong, Catan, so.much.mud, championship D1 lacrosse game in Charlottesville and celebrating Jack’s 8th birthday today 🤍

Here’s a fun fact 👇

Our first website was called The Palm Shop by Davey & Krista!

I created the palm tree logo while I was still in design school.
(And yes, it’s still part of our brand – talk about a throwback 😅)

Looking back, that website was cute. It wasn’t high-end or fancy, but it got the job done! And it helped us launch what would eventually become a thriving design business.

The best thing about websites?
They aren’t etched in stone!
You can update them as your business grows (and with you can do it in just a few clicks).

All this to say…

I almost didn’t try it.

Honestly, popups felt a little 2014 to me. I was sure my “real” marketing was happening somewhere else. Social, SEO, launches, the things you can dress up and call a strategy.

Then I added this one tool to our sites.

One single popup on the template shop has done $47K and counting. The lead capture forms feeding our brand class have brought in tens of thousands more on the back end. Add the carts it’s saved, the coupon codes it’s delivered, the subscribers it’s collected while I sleep, and we’re well past six figures from a tool that costs less than a single client lunch.

I just published a full honest review on the blog. What it is, why it’s worked so well for us, what it’s actually great at, and where it falls short.

A real website design business is not a side hustle. It’s also not a get-rich scheme. It’s a real career with real math.

I’m not telling you that to scare you off. I’m telling you because most marketing in this space either undersells what it takes or oversells what’s possible, and I want to give you the actual numbers.

Here’s what the math looks like for me: Average project price: $4,000 to $5,500 Projects per month: 1 to 2 Working hours: about 25 per week Annual revenue from website design alone: well into six figures

I’m not a unicorn. I built this slowly, on the back of a real system, with a real process, and a real way to find clients without scrambling.
