As founders, executives, investors, and technologists our needs for the ways we develop software are changing. 5 years from now today’s techniques won’t be recognizable. The SDLC is the software development lifecycle. If you don’t make the change to the new SDLC your product, company and team will be at a huge disadvantage. I call it SERS. In this video I will show what we need, how we get there, and a demonstration.

Lets begin with what we need

If I take away anything from working with a Disney Imagineer, it’s this… there’s a universalism to building something new, and in our times that requires good software. It’s not as simple as just making a good web site, mobile app, or information system. It’s got to be able to go viral, we need to build and operate it rapidly, the systems we choose to use need to handle the load, and we need to fix things rapidly.

In our current time every one of us wants their inventions to go viral. We want people to organically take notice of our company, product, and initiative and just show up. That could easily mean your software serves 10,000 people on Monday and by Tuesday 10 million people show up. That’s a good thing, we all want that kind of viral growth.

How is it with billions of dollars spent on Disney experiences, my experience starts with bad software?

If I take away anything from working with a Disney Imagineer, it’s this… there’s a universalism to building something new, and in our times that requires good software. It’s not as simple as just making a good web site, mobile app, or information system.

We all, each of us, have to be good at what we do.

I have a new word for you… SERS. To be good makers we need to make creations that are scalable, sustainable, rapid, and ethical. I call them SERS.

Scalable to handle a dozen people or hundred million people. Sustainable to avoid burning down a forest in delivering it. Rapid to function within a person’s patience. And ethical to make it fair, protect privacy, and support a person’s sense of self. It’s a new word… SERS.

What’s an example of a bad creation? Take a look at the Disney Parks app for iPhone and Android. It fails the ethical part: It implements surge pricing in a way that customers don’t know what they will pay, nor what experience they will have, until the day they are in the park.

It fails the ethical part a second way: It takes attention away from the billion dollars the Disney company provided the Imagineers to make beautiful immersive experiences. Instead you’re staring at your hand. And it’s always the same bland experience, no matter what part of the parks you are in. It’s also not scalable because it depends on the Wifi in the parks.

Would an individual software engineer know how to be a Good Maker only by learning best practices at Python coding? No. Would a tester be a Good Maker by only doing a functional test? No. Would a software architect know how to be a Good Maker by only identifying the code frameworks like Node.js to use? No. Would a CFO be a Good Maker by only estimating the profits? No.

Good Makers turn out creations that are scalable, sustainable, rapid, and ethical. That’s SERS.

The Good Makers work in a world I cal MicroDai. Micro for MicroServices where creations are independently deployable, loosely coupled, scalable, and discoverable by other creations. The D is for Data, big data, little data, SQL, noSQL, organized data, and unstructured data. And the AI is for Artificial Intelligence, and often actually means generative AI and machine learning.

The Good Maker considers the ethics of what they are making. Oppenheimer, great mind, but even he didn't know if the bomb would destroy the earth on detonation. The Good Maker considers the bigger picture, sees the trees and the forest.
