Traditional Ugandan basketry created with hand-woven raffia and banana fiber. With each wrapping, the fiber is threaded through the previous coil to form the basket. Raffia fibers are used in textiles, basket-making, rope-making, garden string, construction and for roofing. Artisans remove the membrane on the underside of each leaf to create the long thin fibers, which can be woven and dyed. This is a perfect basket to decorate your home!

The Artisan Behind The Product: Uganda
More than 40% of Africans do not have the ability to get enough food on a given day. In Uganda over half (55%) of people live below the poverty line. Many of the women producing baskets are infected with HIV/AIDS, and earning this income from basket weaving provides a lifeline of support for the women and their families. These artisans receive health benefits, emergency loans, and transportation. The majority of the artisans are either those who are disabled or widowed. You are providing hope to the disabled, youth, and those suffering from HIV/AIDS by purchasing these baskets.
