Poster for Abhinandan Banerjee's ‘Lobh’ on Mirchi's Sunday Suspense.
Bringing the lost heritage of pulp art to life for ‘Lobh’ was an incredible journey. The story, rooted in the lives of Indian truck drivers, drew us to the vibrant world of truck art. This exploration of ‘truck pulp’ led us to a deep dive into the origins of Western pulp art from the late 1880s and 1890s, celebrated for its raw, bold aesthetic.
We then explored the evolution of desi Hindi pulp art—its provocative adult fiction covers and striking Hindi cinema posters. Finally, we delved into the intricate and dramatic visual styles of Bengali Battala literature.
The concoction of these diverse art forms guided us in crafting a poster that harmonizes the gritty allure of pulp with the eerie essence of horror.
Almost, more than half a decade back, we (as Asterisc) created the very first posters for Sunday Suspense, beginning a legacy and establishing a visual style that other artists and studios continue to follow to this day. When we took on the task of designing this new poster, our goal was to redefine the existing style of Sunday Suspense and other audio channels' artwork. After weeks of research, development, and intense effort, here we are.
Here’s the final artwork, along with close-up views of the details. Thank you!
