The omission of Margot Robbie and Greta Girwig from the 2024 list of Oscar noms left many upset and asserting that this perceived snub exemplified exactly what the film was trying to educate on. This flood of outrage was aided by the fact that Ryan Gosling, the male lead of the film did receive a nomination in his respective category - something many saw as an ironic expression of patriarchy. This article argues my personal view on the issue, that while sexism may have played a role, the much more prevalent issue is that Oscar voters struggled to take a toy-based film as seriously as it’s competitors, dismissing it as a subversive cultural statement instead of regarding it as true cinematic art. This being the reason that Girwig’s direction was not recognized. In terms of the best actor/acrtress category, my personal opinion is simply that Gosling’s acting was quite impressive and something we’d never seen from him before, completely warranting a nomination. While many are viewing the issue as Robbie vs Gosling, woman vs man, in reality it is Robbie vs the 5 other incredible actresses in the category. I think those actresses respective performances were simply more impressive and worthy of a nomination. What are your thoughts?
With many shocked by the Academy's failure to recognise the work of Greta Gerwig and Margot Robbie at yesterday's Oscar nominations – what was behind it all?
