The omission of Margot Robbie and Greta Girwig from the 2024 list of Oscar noms left many upset and asserting that this perceived snub exemplified exactly what the film was trying to educate on. This flood of outrage was aided by the fact that Ryan Gosling, the male lead of the film did receive a nomination in his respective category - something many saw as an ironic expression of patriarchy. This article argues my personal view on the issue, that while sexism may have played a role, the much more prevalent issue is that Oscar voters struggled to take a toy-based film as seriously as it’s competitors, dismissing it as a subversive cultural statement instead of regarding it as true cinematic art. This being the reason that Girwig’s direction was not recognized. In terms of the best actor/acrtress category, my personal opinion is simply that Gosling’s acting was quite impressive and something we’d never seen from him before, completely warranting a nomination. While many are viewing the issue as Robbie vs Gosling, woman vs man, in reality it is Robbie vs the 5 other incredible actresses in the category. I think those actresses respective performances were simply more impressive and worthy of a nomination. What are your thoughts?

With many shocked by the Academy's failure to recognise the work of Greta Gerwig and Margot Robbie at yesterday's Oscar nominations – what was behind it all?

This immersive NYT article opens up an interesting discussion of what categories don’t yet exist at the Oscars. The categories described in the article have a touch of humor and niche in relation to this years lineup of film nominations in particular but it opens up the important question of what categories of genuine and more universal existence in the film world are left unrecognized at the ceremony - potentially in areas of independent films, foreign films, etc. What do you think the Oscars is missing?

The 2024 Grammy’s premiered recently on February 4th. This year’s roster of nominees was packed with many talented musicians and the lineup of live performers was impressive, resulting in a general consensus that, though there were a couple snubs, there were no “worst” moments from the ceremony - a rarity for award shows. What do you think? Were there any moments of disappointment?

The now controvercial figure, Kanye West, recently released his latest studio album Vultures, which is now toping the Bilboard charts despite it’s messy rollout and the controversy surrounding West’s political and social stances. Distributor FUGA declined to support the album, resulting in it’s temporary removal from streaming platforms. This opens up an interesting discussion of art vs artist and of West’s harmful actions and statements should be considered cause for restricting his business and even the release of his art.

“Vultures 1” was briefly removed from Apple Music last week following a dispute with distribution company FUGA.

The recent removal of the entire UMG music catalog from TikTok opens up an interesting discussion about pursuing the best interest of a company as opposed to that of the artists it represents. One of the major points resulting in UMG’s decision to pull their catalog was poor artist compensation - the rate at which TikTok compensate their artists is a fraction of that which other similarly situated major social platforms pay; TikTok accounts for only about 1% of an artist’s total revenue. The TikTok team argues that this move was more beneficial for the company itself than the artists they claim to advocate for. The move was made partly in an attempt to prove that TikTok, a platform whose success has been built in large part by the inclusion of music, could not exist at the same caliber without UMG’s influential catalog. Some artists such as recent Grammy nominee, Noah Kahan have expressed unhappiness with this decision, while others are pleased by the advocacy for better compensation. What do you think? Was this the right call for UMG?

Interesting article on the impending sale of popular streaming platform Soundcloud. This move follows other major efforts to achieve increased profitability such as their 20% workforce cut in 2023. Article states that most of the interest in the company is coming from private enquiry firms rather than music companies … what could this mean for the future of the DSP?

SoundCloud has been preparing to sell for over a year, former employees tell Billboard. “The stakeholders have major investments; it's time.”
