AI Confidence Academy for the over - 50's About Tony Phelps
Hello, I'm Tony Phelps, founder of the AI Confidence Academy. Former Publishing Director with 40+ years' experience.

Now helping people over 50 embrace AI with confidence through practical, jargon-free guidance. I’m Tony Phelps, a retired publisher learning how to boost my pension by building a digital publishing business from home. Like many, I know how daunting it can feel living on a fixed income, especially with the cost of living rising and the future feeling uncertain. I started this newsletter to share what I’m learning, offer honest support and help others like us build new skills, grow a bit of extra income and create a legacy for our families - so we can face the future with more confidence and less worry.

🤖 7 THINGS I DIDN'T REALISE AI COULD DO
When I first started investigating Artificial Intelligence, I assumed it was mainly for technology experts.
I couldn't have been more wrong.
The more I experimented with ChatGPT, the more everyday uses I discovered.
Here are just seven:
1. Plan a holiday
Tell it where you're going, your budget and what you enjoy, and it can help create an itinerary.
2. Teach you something new
Photography, gardening, history, languages, cooking—you can ask it to teach you step by step.
3. Help write difficult emails and letters
Give it the basic facts and ask for a polite, friendly or formal version.
4. Suggest meals from what's already in your kitchen
Tell it what you've got and ask what you could cook.
5. Help organise your week
Appointments, jobs around the house, exercise, hobbies—it can help turn a muddle into a simple plan.
6. Help you explore a new hobby
Ask what equipment you need, how much it might cost and how a complete beginner should start.
7. Explain complicated subjects in plain English
This might be my favourite.
You can simply say:
“Explain that again as though I'm a complete beginner.”
And it will.
None of these requires programming or technical knowledge.
You just need to know how to ask.
That's one of the reasons I wrote AI Made Simple for the Over 50s.
There are 50 practical prompts in the book showing you exactly what to ask and how to get better answers.
But I'm curious...
Which of those seven would you be most likely to use?
Put the number in the comments.

📚 I FINALLY DID IT — MY NEW BOOK IS FINISHED!
After months of writing, editing, changing things and occasionally wondering whether I'd ever reach the end, I'm delighted to say that my new book is finished.
It's called:
AI MADE SIMPLE FOR THE OVER 50s
The Complete Beginner's Guide to Using Artificial Intelligence with Confidence
And it includes 50 practical AI prompts you can actually use in everyday life.
I wrote this book because I kept noticing something.
There's an enormous amount being said about Artificial Intelligence and ChatGPT—but so much of it seems to be written by technology experts for other technology experts.
What about the rest of us?
What about someone in their 50s, 60s or 70s who is curious about AI but simply wants somebody to explain it in plain English?
That's who I've written this book for.
No coding. No technical jargon. No previous experience required.
Just straightforward explanations, practical examples and 50 prompts you can start experimenting with yourself.
I'll share details of where you can get a copy very shortly.
For now, I'm simply rather pleased to be able to say:
It's finished!
And seeing Tony Phelps on the cover makes all those hours worthwhile.
QUESTION: Have you tried ChatGPT yet?

One question.
That's all it took.

I wasn't trying to master artificial intelligence.
I simply wanted help organising an idea.

The answer surprised me.
It wasn't perfect.
But it was incredibly useful.
That was the moment I realised AI wasn't replacing my thinking.
It was helping it.

What's the one piece of technology you've never really understood?

For me, years ago, it was cloud storage.

Today's Simple AI Tip
Don't ask:
Tell me about gardening.
Instead ask:
I'm a beginner gardener in Essex. What vegetables should I plant this month that are easy to grow?

The more detail you give AI...
The better the answer you'll receive.
Simple.

A confession...
When everyone started talking about AI, I almost ignored it.

I assumed it would be complicated.
Full of technical jargon.
Probably designed for younger people.

I couldn't have been more wrong.
Today I use AI almost every day.

Not because I'm a technology expert.
Because it makes everyday life easier.
Sometimes our biggest obstacle isn't technology.
It's our own assumptions.

Stop the Scroll
Do you think you've left it too late to learn AI?
You're not alone.

Many people over 50 tell me they feel they've "missed the boat" when it comes to technology.
I felt exactly the same.
Then I asked my first question using ChatGPT.
Within minutes I realised something important...

You don't need to understand artificial intelligence.
You simply need to know how to ask a question.
That's where confidence begins.
Have you tried ChatGPT yet?
👇 I'd love to hear your thoughts.
