AdHelper

AdHelper AdHelper is a free service to help small businesses figure out how to advertise, where to advertise, and who to get marketing help from.

We want to help small businesses succeed. AdHelper was founded by owners of small businesses that found it increasingly hard to navigate the many choices one has in deciding how to advertise, where to advertise, and who to get marketing help from. We're that missing link to help you figure out the answers to these questions, so we can get you on the track to success (and we don't charge a thing). Our official site (www.adhelper.com) will launch early 2014.

PR - I also have a summer camp business that runs in several states. For all the advertising that we do, articles written up about us ("Top Five Summer Camps in...") are the most consistent in bringing Moms to our site (yet until recently it's been one of the areas we haven't pushed for much with marketing). So, we'll be trying the advice of this article on creating our own press page. (I have not tried presskings services) - Toby

PressKing is the first all-in-one solution for managing media relations. Find out on this blog what's happening behind the scenes at PressKing and learn how to better manage your media relations.

Social Media - The first yelp review for my other business was a bad one. And bad is an understatement. She wanted to tear us to pieces. So I responded politely and acknowledged her concerns and for the sake of my business, pointed out her inaccuracies. In the end, I think the whole exchange helped my business because people saw that I cared. These guys went to an extreme in their response and it paid off.

Every once in a while, giving a foul-tempered customer a public skewering can be good for business.

A friend recently asked me about BNI. Apparently, they're serious about about networking, so plan on carrying the business cards of each member of your chapter, and they'll do the same for you. My friend was hesitant because it meant committing to a weekly meeting at 7am with the group (which she had to be interviewed for) for a year.

So is anybody a member? Any thoughts? I suppose if you're going to do a networking group, you should do it right (but networking at 7am sounds rough to me). - Toby

With over 150,000 members worldwide, BNI is the largest business networking organization in the world.

We tested Outbrain out on our blog (adhelper.com) recently and had a lot of success. Those "from around the web" articles you see on so many sites (like CNN) are managed by them.

Keep an eye on your campaign though and make sure the titles of your articles are very specific to who you're targeting. One article of ours found a lot of success with clicks, but only because it was placed on the wrong kind of site late at night (we wanted people interested in marketing and not looking for funny jokes).

And of course when people are on your site, then you can funnel the readers to your products or services. Please let me know if you've tried it out. - Toby

"I think of Outbrain the same way I think of a bag of my favorite tortilla chips. Once you start, you just can't stop. We saw immediate, positive results from day one onward. Outbrain is definitely a no-brainer."

Does your business have a marketing plan? Here's a hefty article from our blog designed for anybody who has a franchise (so please share if you know of anybody who does). It also encompasses all aspects of marketing that every business should follow. If you skim, pay attention to the red and green headers, and make sure you're covering all those bases. - Toby

How should franchise marketing fees be used? What franchise marketing should be provided by the franchisor? What marketing should be done by franchisees?

A recent article on how Upworthy has perfected their marketing efforts and sucked us in. If you're interested in subscriber acquisition and/or A/B testing (and I love tales of A/B testing), you'll find this interesting. - Toby

Upworthy launched on March 26th, 2012, and just seven months later, they were getting almost 9 million monthly uniques visitors. In November of 2013, just 20 months later, Upworthy saw close to 88M unique visitors worldwide, with mobile visitors eclipsing desktop viewers for the first time. Those 88...

I went to a party not so long ago and ended up speaking to a guy who does A/B testing for a big internet company (and makes a ton of money doing it). I had no idea that the color of a button could affect sales by hundreds of thousands of dollars (green was the most popular at the time, but he said it changes). I'm fascinated by split testing, so for your reading pleasure, here's an old article on how Romney used testing to drive his campaign site.

So how do small businesses compete? Here's a couple sites that help you do split testing:
optimizely.com
visualwebsiteoptimizer.com
I have only briefly tested Optimizely so I can't make a recommendation.

And for those of you in business for yourself (coaches, therapists...), you can test which picture gets a better response, or which "about me" writing draws more people in. And please let me know if you've tried testing and if it helped. - Toby

From day one, Mitt Romney’s digital campaign team understood a common truth: the campaign is not a creativity contest – what looks best and what works best for the website is not always the same. “We tried to be very conscious that this team doesn’t have creative opinions, this team has data,” says…

Before you decide to spend all of your time using Facebook to promote your business, you should know all of the challenges that will come with the process and figure out if it's the right place for you. To sum up the article, you're going to have to pay to reach all the people you worked so hard to reach. However, my understanding is that if you get interaction with your posts (likes, comments, clicks), that will boost your reach.

And here I am with less than 100 likes, so (and now for my shameless plug) please like us, like the posts if you find them useful, and share us if you think I'm giving you quality content (or if my Mom convinced you to join, I'll accept that too). Thanks! - Toby

I run another business, and we're growing in spite of some poor marketing choices we've made along the way. One of our early mistakes was hiring an SEO company before we optimized our website. We had just assumed we needed more people to come to our site, and we did get more visitors, but it didn't make a bit of difference. Here's an article I found with some tips to keep in mind.

I asked Paras Chopra, the founder of Visual Website Optimizer, for his tips on how to improve a website's conversion rate.
