Our friends at needed a new logo for an upcoming anti-violence initiative. The aptly named Violence Prevention Program aims to create a healthy society by providing educational opportunities for youth that address damaging attitudes and behaviours, which contribute to violence and discrimination.

We were tasked with creating a bold and slightly edgy mark that would appeal to youth. Simply put, it had to be cool or lit or fire or whatever we’re saying now.

A mark for an upcoming urban/combat apparel company called Feral Ghost. Our task was to create a versatile mark that can used on everything from sunglasses to hoodies. The mark is a literal interpretation of the name. It combines the shape of a coyote head with the familiar features of a skull.

A question we get often is, what's the difference between Branding and Marketing? Depending who you talk to the definition can vary or sound a little different. Unfortunately this can lead to a lot of confusion for those trying to educate themselves on the topic.

Hopefully we can provide some clarity and understanding between Branding and Marketing. Our definition comes from the brilliant branding minds of Chris Do: Business Designer The Futur Marty Neumeier and Fitness Jones Training.

Let us know in the comments if you found this helped provide some clarity.

Send us a message if you think you need marketing, branding or both. We'd be more than happy to to help anyway we can.

Laura Joy Photography came to us looking to level up her business with a rebrand. Through our strategy sessions we discovered that she wanted to create a brand that was dynamic, fun, welcoming and timeless. It was also clear that Laura's main focus is her client. She makes sure to provide guidance and create an atmosphere that makes them feel relaxed, comfortable and excited to get their photos taken. After all, the more comfortable you are the easier it is to get your photo taken.

Our objective was to take all of these essential characteristics and translate them into the brand's visual identity. It was a challenge to create the perfect balance but our collaborative process allowed us to land on this beautiful and elegant identity.

Side note, there's a little Easter egg. If you look closely, you'll see the two faces behind TALIS Creative in the mock-ups.

Honesty is the perfect name for this conceptual identity. It symbolizes the all-natural organic ingredients and communicates dependability and transparency with it's consumer.

Oh, did we mention that there's also a flower called Annual Honesty aka Lunaria annua. We wouldn't make this up.

Client feedback on a project is inevitable. Most of the time the feedback is positive, but sometimes a client will ask for a change that can compromise a good design.

How can you politely tell the client that it's not a good idea and shouldn't be done? Should you even say anything?

We believe that it's our job to educate the client and rationalize the design with our research and knowledge. It's also important to always come back to the goals established in the discovery session. These goals will refocus the project and help the client refrain from personal preference.

However, sometimes, even after educating and reminding them of the goals, "No" is not an option. So all you can do is simply ask...."Are you sure? Are you really sure? Alright then...".

Have you ever had to tell a client "No"? If so, how did you do it?

To create a more effective logo, we need to understand how our brains process, recognize and interpret the world around us. Alina Wheeler's book Designing Brand Identity, describes this in 3 simple stages. Shape. Colour. Form. This concept is referred to as "The Sequence of Cognition".

Let us know in the comments if this process was applied when designing your logo.
