Today François-Philippe Champagne tabled the first budget of Mark Carney’s government. It’s a budget that is focused on building Canada 🇨🇦 and investing for our future at a crucial time. We will spend less so we can invest more in the initiatives that help grow our economy.

Some key highlights include:

✔️ A tax cut for 22M Canadians up to $840/year

🏠The removal of GST for new home buyers

🔨Significant investments to support affordable housing and community infrastructure.

🌾 Programs to help our local farmers export their product.

🌲 Key investments for our forestry sector.

🚢 generational investment in trade infrastructure like ports and airports.

👩‍🔬 An increase in youth job opportunities through work placements and the Canada Summer Jobs Program.

Importantly, we are focused on finding efficiencies in government spending to maintain fiscal balance.

✔️ Through our comprehensive spending review, we are committed to balancing the operational budget by 2028.

✔️ Canada maintains the best net debt to GDP ratio in the G7.

✔️ Canada remains one of two G7 countries that has a AAA credit rating.

I’ll be highlighting more specifics in the days ahead, but you can read more below 👇

Two local organizations are receiving support from the Houston Government to advance food security, wellness, and community resilience, Hants West MLA Melissa Sheehy-Richard announced today.

The Station Learning Farm will receive $35,000 to support its 2025 Meals To Heal program, which prepares nutritious meals made with local ingredients and tailored to individuals with specific medical conditions. The initiative connects local farmers with community health needs, promoting wellness through fresh, locally sourced food.

Elsewhere in the region, The Veteran Farm Project Society will receive $8,000 for its 2025 Seeds To Sustenance program, which empowers women veterans and women in the
community to develop the skills and knowledge to grow their own food. The project enhances both personal resilience and long-term community food security across the region.

“These two organizations are shining examples of how community-led initiatives can strengthen both health and connection,” said MLA Sheehy-Richard. “When we bring people together around shared goals like health, food security, and learning, we strengthen not just individuals but the entire community.”

The funding reflects the Houston government’s ongoing commitment to supporting grassroots organizations that promote food sustainability, wellness, and community development
throughout Nova Scotia. “By investing in projects like these, we’re not just funding programs, we’re investing in people,” said Sheehy-Richard. “This is about empowering Nova Scotians to lead, to grow, and to create positive change right where they live.”

Anyone who’s had the privilege of working alongside Nicole knows just how truly deserving she is of this award. She’s one of those rare people who seems to be everywhere at once — coordinating, managing, organizing, and, let’s be honest, sometimes wrangling the ring crew at the Windsor Spring Horse Show with unmatched precision, calm, and good humor.

Nicole is the kind of volunteer every event dreams of having — dependable, efficient, and endlessly positive, no matter what challenges come her way. Course designers love working with her because they know everything will run smoothly under her watch. She brings a quiet confidence and a can-do attitude that sets the tone for everyone around her.

But what makes Nicole even more remarkable is that she does all of this while wearing about a dozen other hats. She’s a devoted 4-H and Pony Club mom, a director with the Windsor Agricultural Society, and together with her husband Wayne, she helps operate Martock Glen Farm and Oulton’s Meats — all while raising their five amazing children. And somehow, she still finds the time and heart to be ringside, cheering on her daughters, Josee and Jorja, as they compete.

Nicole steps up wherever she’s needed — often before anyone even has to ask. Her energy, generosity, and unwavering commitment have made an incredible impact not just on the Windsor Spring Horse Show, but across the entire Nova Scotia Hunter Jumper community.

We cannot wait to celebrate our volunteer of the year at the NSHJA Awards Banquet on November 22nd. Congratulations, Nicole — this recognition couldn’t be more well-earned.

Out with the old, in with the NEW!

Elmcroft Park (the one by the HAC pool) will be closed starting this week. The existing playground structures will be removed to make way for a new and improved playground, scheduled to be installed next year. Within the next few months, we will be requesting proposals from interested companies to submit designs with accessible features.

We appreciate your understanding and look forward to welcoming the community back to a renewed park space in 2026!
