Vote Jim Beck for BTRC Councillor

Vote Jim Beck for BTRC Councillor Hi, I'm Jim Beck and I'm running for election in the 2024 Local Government elections for the BTRC.

16/03/2024

Vote counting commences 6 pm today: big shout out to anyone who’s voted for me in this election. Thank you for your support. So with your support and a touch of luck I hope to be elected and work for you all in making this shire an even better place to live. If I’m not elected I wish everyone who is the best for the next term. I want to see the council supporting our emergency services a little better and I want the council to open their eyes and listen to the community. Fingers crossed, thanks again.

TAMBO MEET AND GREET
Firstly thanks everyone that turned up to listen to what we candidates had to say and for sticking around for chats afterwards.

Here's some points to let you know how I think and I will represent you all if I am fortunate enough to be elected on March 16th:

1. Government Office for Tambo: (QGAP or similar) I want our council to lobby the government for a QGAP in Tambo so police can be out doing what police are meant to do, deter criminals from stopping in our shire, and to be patrolling our community rather than doing driver licences and registrations.
2. I have spoken to council workers from Blackall and Tambo and a lot are saying they have been told they cannot talk to elected councillors as those workers work for the council. That advice given to council workers would surely be a breach of their human rights and if elected I will chase this up and ensure council workers are told of that right.
3. I will represent everyone equally and that includes the council workers.
4. Council financial position and council workers pay: If I am elected I will immediately ask why council workers from Blackall and Tambo are telling me their still waiting for the last EB pay increment they were apparently owed from July 1st 2023. If the council is delaying this pay rise without some legal hold up beyond the councils control they need to be called out on it!
5. Tourism: Our entire shire needs to have tourists stop for longer and we need our shire as a holiday destination. Lets sell our shire better and work with other shires to get us on the destination map.
6. Solar Farms: If in the next 4 years council are asked to vote on proposed solar farms being built in our shire I will vote No. Solar farms have a shelf life and and there is no guarantee who will be responsible for the clean up/removal in years to come if the solar company is closed down. We do not want our graziers left holding that cost. It's not work the risk at this time and we need to ensure graziers are protected against those costs. We need reliable power solutions and while I'm a supporter of home solar, I am not a supporter of massive solar farms on good grazing/farming lands. We need greater subsidies so we can all afford good quality solar on our own roof. I have gone from $400 to $600 a month to no bill with our home solar system but the cost is still too high for many.
7. How I would vote in council: I'm disappointed at the suggestion it's difficult to vote no in council meetings. In the police I was a strong union representative and I will bring that strength to my decision making for the shire. I will vote the way I think is best for the community or matter at hand. I will not be a puppet voting to be popular with the council in council meetings.
8. My family and retirement: Bronwyn and I have no plans on moving! I retired in the shire because we like it here, and we have family here. We own our house in Tambo and we use businesses and recreation facilities in Blackall and Tambo. We need both towns to prosper and provide opportunity for our children and grandchildren to have good jobs, business opportunities, and reasons to live here. We need our grazing industry (and everyone else) to be supported with low rates charges where possible, we need good all weather roads to those properties and we need to ensure we support the satellite businesses that are supporting the rural industry.

If you have not yet voted, and you want someone who will stand up for the community, vote for James Beck. Thanks everyone.

POST ELECTION.
After the election and if I am elected to the council this page will have to be closed from comment and posts by anyone including myself. This is because if I am elected I will have to adhere to the councils social media policy that wont allow me to have my own councillor social media.

Councillors get a council email address and I have my mobile. I will be contactable and visible and you will find it easy to get to speak with me.

Postal voting packages have started to arrive.
Please make sure your vote is counted for both Mayor and Councillors and get it in the mail.
I will be at Tambo's Meet and Greet this Saturday at 6pm. Please come along and chat. I believe all candidates from Blackall will be here as well so it's a great opportunity to meet them as well.

I speak to everyone and anyone and over the past few months I have been talking with a lot of council employees and the common point they make is that they are told they cant talk to councillors about council issues because those employees work for the council. If you are a council employee and have been told this I would be interested in hearing from you. While candidates cant promise anything we can listen and if elected we can take your concerns to council.

If I'm elected to the council I will take this matter to the Mayor and CEO to ensure our extremely valuable council workers are given their basic Human Right of freedom of expression. You have to vote in the election, therefore you should have the right to speak to the people you have elected.

I was a Police Union representative for many years, an elected H&S Representative (qualified rep) and later a H&S Advisor (H&S Cert4) for the police and I have a keen interest in ensuring workers are treated with respect and dignity and ensuring they are given a voice.

I look forward to seeing some of you on Saturday.

Canditate, Ballot Paper Draw
I attended Blackall today for the ballot draw that determines candidates position on the ballot paper. Several Blackall candidates were present along with both Mayoral candidates. I was the only Councillor candidate from Tambo to attend and I was drawn out number 6, so look for me being the sixth person on the ballot paper. It was good to chat with other candidates and meet Alina Rasmussen who is also a candidate from the Blackall end of the shire.

POSTAL VOTING is the only way to vote , so please make sure you fill out forms correctly and mail them on time. Ensure your vote is counted, and vote James Beck to BTRC Regional Council. A vote for me is a vote for accountability, and honest representation.

CONFLICTS OF INTEREST.
I had a conversation today and was asked what committees I was on. The people speaking with me suggested I would be excused from any Council meeting if a matter relative to that committee was being voted on due to a conflict of interest. The discussion went on to mention that any donations/sponsorship made to events and committees would also be considered a conflict of interest. A quick read of Councils meeting minutes shows just how often Councillors are required to leave the room due to conflicts of interest.

To the best of my knowledge I have no conflicts of interest that would stop me from voting on any matter in a Council meeting, and I could speak to you or your committee as an independent councillor with the knowledge my vote would be counted.

This was something I had not considered but it's worth noting when voting in the upcoming local government election on March 16th.

9 Councillor Nominations at COB 12/2/24.

9 people running for Councillor in the Blackall Tambo Regional Council Elections so far. With at least 3 new people running it's very important to be informed about who you vote for and not waste that vote by submitting 'donkey' votes.

A vote for me is a vote for our entire shire and a guarantee that every decision I make will made after consultation with the community effected by that vote. I will not vote yes to be popular in Council, rather I will vote for what is right on the matter being decided, and I will consult with those effected by my vote in Council.

VOTE James Beck to the Blackall Tambo Regional Council on March 16th 2024.

09/02/2024

At close of office Friday we have 8 people running for Councillor positions with the Blackall Tambo regional Council and 2 for Mayor.

Nominations close at midday on Tuesday.

Sadly some will not be elected and that's why I want everyone to have conversations with friends and neighbours. Make an informed decision about who to vote for, and please don't waste your vote.

If you want someone who's worked with local government, state government agencies, Federal government agencies, and someone who has over 32 years experience working with State, Federal, and local government laws and policies then vote for me on March 16th. I have the experience and the desire to ensure decisions made by our council are legal and and in compliance with policies set by government and this council. I want all decisions to be fair, equitable and accountable.

If I'm expected to accept what's being done in Council decisions, then before I vote I'll be asking the difficult questions we all want answers to.

VOTE JAMES BECK to the Blackall Tambo Regional Council in the upcoming election.

VOTING DAY IS COMING
5 weeks and 3 days until voting for our Councillors for the following 4 year term. I urge everyone to do a formal vote for Councillors, and make your vote count.
On voting day I will be at the Blackall Polling Booth in the morning until lunchtime and Tambo after that. Please share this page with your friends if you can. Don’t waste your vote. Vote for me if you want another Councillor who will ask the questions you want answered. Vote for me if you want a Councillor who has a work history and a genuine interest in ensuring every decision is made within the boundaries set by policy and law, and is committed to open and honest discussion to ensure fair decisions are made.
