On Sunday, 👻 CEO Evan Spiegel said “it’s possible” that TikTok, the Chinese video sharing app, could overtake Instagram. Yes—that Instagram, the platform with more than 1 billion monthly active users and which estimated to be worth over $100 billion in 2018.

Why?

“talent-based content is often more interesting than status-based content.” Meaning clever lip syncing > pics of glamping in Patagonia.

“I love TikTok,” Spiegel said. “I’m a big fan.”

The backstory: With Zuck leading the charge, -owned Instagram has earned a reputation for copying some of Snapchat’s most beloved features, such as Stories. As Snap tries to escape Insta’s shadow, it’s invested in augmented reality tech to differentiate itself from its peers.

TikTok, on the other hand, came out of nowhere to become the second-most downloaded app in the world in #2019 , according to Sensor Tower. Only WhatsApp (another FB property) was more popular.
