Here's me this morning telling my Guildford Business BNI group about the nomination 'my' British Birds book has in The Week Junior Book Awards 2026.
Now, all manner of businesses that come together at BNI and I knew a lot were going to be sitting wondering how a designer of a children's book could be useful to their business. The common link through all my projects is designing with empathy and understanding the audience's needs.
Empathetic designers organise content so users don't have to work harder than necessary, the goal being to make understanding feel effortless. In order to do so designers need to understand the needs of who is looking at it.
The audience may be young, they might be elderly, they might be in a hurry, they might be in all manner of situations and accessibility is everything.
The fonts, colours, hierarchy and way information is put together is all part of the process, but always at the forefront of my mind is the end user whether its infographics, slide decks, brochures, exhibitions or children's books.
Can I help your business communicate better?
