A historic library in Portugal relies on live bats to protect its priceless collection of old books. At the University of Coimbra, one of the oldest universities in Europe, bats roam the library halls at night, feeding on insects that could damage centuries-old manuscripts.

The bats are welcome residents — they’ve been part of the ecosystem for generations. Each evening, they leave their hiding spots behind shelves and curtains to hunt, acting as natural pest control without the need for chemicals.

Good afternoon fellow nerds! It has been a while, but Nerd Herd has not disappeared! While Mrs. Nerd tries to figure out 3D printing and the other gadgets Mr. Nerd used, Mrs. Nerd is still tinkering with her own things, not all of them successful. However, one project for the library has turned out- A great way to reuse old discarded books!

Sometimes kids can blow your mind. I took chalk out to recess on Monday. A third grader spent the whole recess drawing, but I didn't pay attention to what he was drawing. Tuesday I went out to recess and discovered this. He did Star Wars proud. Mr. Nerd would have loved this. My nerd heart is happy.

Christmas with kids means teacher gifts. Littlest Nerd still wanted a mug for her teacher, so I took my first solo attempt at pressing a mug. Mr. Nerd and I always worked together to design them, I would prep them for pressing, and he always did the actual heat pressing. While it wasn't perfect, I know Mr. Nerd would be proud of me for my first attempt pressing a mug without him.

Halloween was hard for the Nerd Herd. Mr. Nerd had been working on Little Nerd's Death Watch costume. Her big sister finished painting what Mr. Nerd hadn't finished, and Little Nerd was still able to wear the costume Mr. Nerd had worked so hard on for her. We may be missing Mr. Nerd, but he still all around us. Nerd Herd Designs will continue, with Mr. Nerd watching over us.

On Friday, we lost Mr. Nerd. Nerd Herd Designs was his idea, the perfect side hustle for a tinkerer. I do not know what direction I will take Nerd Herd Designs, but it will not go away. Some of the sublimation printing will continue. The 3D printing side of Nerd Herd Designs will take longer for me to figure out, and I haven't even looked at the new laser engraving. Please check in occasionally, and if you want something printed please reach out and I'll see what I can do.

The dark side has come to the library! This week Darth Vader made his way to the library. He will keep watch over the Star Wars shelf. Yes, the library has a shelf dedicated solely to the Star Wars collection, and it gets a lot of circulation!
