Prime Video’s adaptation of Elle Kennedy’s hockey romance Off Campus premiered last week with a bang. Within days, it hit #1 globally on Prime Video’s TV chart, ahead of streaming heavyweights The Boys and Citadel.

The book-market effect was immediate and indisputable:

Following the launch, Elle Kennedy now has 9 books in the Kindle Store Top 100, including the #1, #3, and #4 spots (at the time of this writing).

Cross-media popularity pushes book sales. It is that simple.

And it is not only one author. In our latest 2026 Kindle data, 11 out of the Top 100 highest-selling Kindle books of the year thus far are sports or hockey romance titles. That is an 11% share for a genre many still consider a niche.

“So what’s all that hype about sports and hockey romance?”

Well, I’d say one graph says it all.

Search interest in sports romance and hockey romance has moved from niche curiosity to mainstream demand.

Add BookTok, bestseller visibility, and now streaming TV, and you get a powerful feedback loop:

1. Readers discover the books.
2. The books drive the fandom.
3. The fandom attracts TV.
4. TV sends new readers back to the books.
5. Repeat from Step 1.

And indie authors have become a key part of the IP generation for this cycle.

We’ve been tracking Sports Romance for 10 years. And over the last few years, the growth, especially in Hockey Romance, has been impossible to ignore.
Now the genre is moving firmly into the mainstream, from BookTok momentum to major TV adaptations. 🏒
Good timing: the new K-lytics Sports Romance Report drops later today. 📊

This is now the fifth year we are publishing the Fantasy Romance / report. ( Google k-lytics fantasy romance )

After each edition, I received messages asking: “What if I missed the boat? Isn’t this just another fad that will end soon?”

It is not.

Major studios continue to invest heavily in TV and film adaptations of bestsellers in the genre (see chart.)

Most of these projects are still in early development. Releases are unlikely before 2027 or even 2028. That is exactly what makes this powerful. The publicity wave is already queued up and will continue to drive future demand for romantasy books.

Of course, not every project will make it to production. The A Court of Thorns and Roses adaptation at Hulu did not move forward. The rights have reverted to Sarah J. Maas. In my view, she is unlikely to sit on them for long, especially as ACOTAR 6 and 7 have recently crushed the Kindle bestseller charts on pre-orders alone.

The full report is a 90+ page PDF covering analyses based on more than 10,000 romantasy titles and a seminar video of more than one hour. I hope to see you there.

Happy writing, happy publishing,
Alex

This is now the fifth year we are publishing the Fantasy Romance / Romantasy report. Already after the first edition, I received numerous messages asking: “Isn’t this just another short-lived fad?” It is not.

Major studios continue to invest heavily in TV and film adaptations, including:

- Spark of the Everflame (Hulu / 20th Television)
- Quicksilver (Netflix)
- Powerless (Amazon MGM Studios / Prime)
- Fourth Wing (Amazon MGM Studios / Prime)
- The Bridge Kingdom (Red Sage Studios)
- Divine Rivals (Paramount Pictures)
- Lightlark (Universal Pictures)
- From Blood and Ash (Sony Pictures Television)
- Obsidian (Amazon MGM Studios)

P.S. The previously announced A Court of Thorns and Roses adaptation at Hulu has been officially canceled, with the rights reverting to Sarah J. Maas. I am sure she is not gonna just sit on them.

P.P.S. The investment firm The Chernin Group backed Entangled Publishing (parent company of Red Tower Books, publisher of Fourth Wing) at a $400 million valuation.

P.P.P.S. The new K-lytics report is ready (link in comments).

Happy publishing.

[📺 Commercial Break ] The setting is familiar and safe: the perfect marriage, the perfect family, the perfect life. The disruption is not.
A husband with a horrifying secret, a nanny gone rogue, the charming guy next door with a chilling past...

This is the formula that dominates today’s thriller market.

That it sells books is no surprise. Its persistence is. TIME Magazine even dedicated a full article to it: “The Domestic Thriller Is the Defining Metaphor of Our Time.”

🟩 Market Signals 🟩

Google search data shows that “domestic thriller,” once a niche term used mainly by publishing insiders, is now widely used by mainstream readers.

In 2025, domestic and psychological thrillers accounted for 21 of the Top 100 Kindle books of the year on Amazon.com and as many as 33 in the UK. That market share is simply exceptional.

Yes, Freida McFadden continues to dominate the segment. The film adaptation of The Housemaid, which grossed nearly $400 million, has created a strong halo effect for the genre and beyond.

At the same time, our latest data reveals a broader base of authors succeeding in this space, while demand from streaming, TV, and film continues to drive sustained interest.

What works in this segment is not random. Our new K-lytics Psychological & Domestic Thriller Report dissects the genre based on the sales history of more than 7,000 titles.

As TIME Magazine put it: “The trend’s persistence and the thirst with which its products are consumed suggest a more profound connection between these stories and their audience.”

If you want to become part of this connection, the new report and video provide the full analysis.

I’m pleased to announce the brand-new Spring 2026 Edition of our semi-annual Mystery, Thriller & Suspense Genre Report.

Your Genre Category Map

Our new report is a treasure trove of insights, offering a comprehensive overview of the genre’s performance and a detailed data breakdown of all 152 MTS categories, including Level-4 and Level-5 sub-categories.

The report highlights the MTS categories that have shown the most significant upward or downward trend in the last 12 months.

Sales Trending Up

MTS is a top-performing genre on Amazon. It ranks #2 after romance but shows a more cyclical performance than romance.

The average sales rank of the Top 100 MTS titles has continued its upward trend over the last six months.

A key contributor was certainly the cinematic adaptation of The Housemaid, which grossed nearly $400 million and provided a substantial 'halo effect' for the entire psychological thriller segment, lifting the visibility of the MTS bestseller list overall.

Mystery, thriller, suspense, and crime novels have captured a 30% market share among the 100 best-selling Kindle books of 2025 — and that’s excluding romantic suspense titles.

In a competitive market, access to transparent and reliable data is essential — and that’s exactly what K-lytics delivers:

New Mystery, Thriller & Suspense Report 2026
(Spring Edition)

You’ll gain insights into sales development, book supply, the best-performing categories, high-selling covers, leading authors and publishers, trending keywords, optimal price points, effective titles, compelling book descriptions, and more.

In addition to the main genre report and video, you’ll also find a Top 100 Market Snapshots bonus report and my detailed commentary in the seminar video.

The report includes a 1-hour seminar video on the download page, where I will take you through the research results.

Additionally, the video includes an analysis of the 100 highest-selling Kindle books of the year 2025 for both Amazon.com and Amazon.co.uk as well as the overall Mystery, Thriller, & Suspense big hitters in both markets.
