A fairly big announcement. My wife (Bernita) are opening a new meadery that will be opening sometime this spring. I will still be selling honey, but the name will eventually change (with some regret) to Lionshead Honey.

I will be attending the Kamloops Wednesday as well as the Saturday markets. Looks like a decent day tomorrow. See you there.

Tomorrow is the first farmer's market of the season. See you there

Well the farmers market is over. I will be making deliveries into Kamloops on a regular basis through the winter. Please message me if you want some honey. I will try to be better at checking this page. Be safe out there.

It looks like markets will have some uncertainty going forward. There is still lots of honey for sale.

Queen rearing season has begun. Placed the first queen cells in nucs this past Tuesday.. Beautiful weather for this time of year so hoping for decent results. The first round of queens can be iffy due to weather. Very excited for this season as improvements have been made both in stock selection and mating site setup. The goal, productive bees that maintain low levels of varroa mites.

This is yet another cautionary tale about the hazards of moving biological material around. The biggest problems the beekeeping industry faces are self inflicted wounds as a result of careless movement of bees. We have managed to globalize the distribution of a large number of bee pathogens. Yet we continue to import bees from off continent. My bee raising model is not to import queens and bees from far away, but rather raise bees locally. The further the source of bees, the greater the risk of something very new can come into the system and disrupt it. We can ask bees to adapt, but we shouldn't keep presenting them with new challenges.

One of the reasons I choose the name "bootstrap" is that the business was developed over time from very humble beginnings. As you can see from my cover photo, my boxes are home made from cull 2 by 8's, I also make most of my own frames from scrap pallet and crating material. Beekeeping can be very expensive to get into, but it doesn't have to be. This to keep down costs as I nurtured lines of bees that can deal with problems imposed on them by an ignorant beekeeping industry. It has taken time and is by no means a finished product, but it is gratifying to see that bees are able to adapt based on principles of natural selection. But perhaps most important, I am wondering if we have a society that allows people getting their start, the ability to bootstrap their own existence into something better.

Not nearly enough.

Check out my new logo done my talented and dear sister Trish. This motto in small writing reads "bees at the edge of chaos"
