One of the best things about the Surrey Social is getting to meet such an amazing and eclectic group of female founders and creatives.

I’m so inspired by these strong, capable women running such a variety of businesses: from website designers, private chefs, bookkeepers, art teachers, coaches, bespoke travel specialists, marketing experts, nutritionists, solicitors, paid ads experts, email marketing specialists… and perhaps one of my favourites: a wildly successful and lovely Christmas blogger!

Just as I turned 40, my life as I knew it imploded. As my world tipped on its axis, I realised I needed to make a major shift so I could solo parent my boys.

I’d been mulling over my (very limited) options for a career that would give me the flexibility to truly be there for them, when two friends sent me details about a Diploma in Strategic Social Media Marketing.

I almost dismissed it. I thought: I’m too old to work in social media. It’s a young person’s game.

Thankfully, I didn’t listen to that inner critic. Instead, I threw myself into six intense months of running a live campaign across multiple platforms to complete my diploma.

I’ve been working in social media marketing ever since, now specialising in organic Instagram marketing.

I love the creativity, the variety, the flexibility, and the lovely people I get to work with.

Going to a networking event solo? Don’t panic! Here are some simple tips to make it easier:

✅ Wear what you feel confident in
✅ Smile (it helps more than you think)
✅ Be curious (no pitching)
✅ Have a few conversation starters
✅ Know how to sum up what you do
✅ Find common ground

Networking gets easier every time you do it!
