May 1st 1994 the date will be remembered as one of Formula One’s darkest days. On lap 7 of the San Marino Grand Prix, race leader Ayrton Senna’s Williams Renault ran off the Imola circuit at 190 mph and slammed in to a concrete wall, whilst crashes in F1 are not uncommon this one ultimately took his life.
Senna’s death sent shockwaves round the world. He was a 3 time world champion, considered one of the greatest of all time, and was a sportsman that transcended his profession. So much so that he was given a state funeral in his native Brazil.
Although the cause of his crash remains a mystery to this day. His accident sparked a revolution of changes that make Formula One a much safer sport today.
