Susan Kare is the visionary graphic designer who humanised personal computing through her work on the original Apple Macintosh. Using a grid of pixels as her canvas, she crafted a visual language that replaced complex code with intuitive, whimsical metaphors. Her most enduring creations include the
Happy Mac startup icon, the Command symbol (⌘), and the Trash can, all of which bridged the gap between man and machine. Beyond icons, she designed foundational typefaces like Chicago and Geneva. Her minimalist aesthetic and artistic wit transformed the cold screen into a friendly, approachable workspace for millions.

Michael C. Gross (1945–2015) was an American artist, designer, and film producer renowned for creating the iconic Ghostbusters logo. A Pratt Institute alumnus, Gross began his career as art director for National Lampoon (1970–1974), where he designed the infamous “If You Don’t Buy This Magazine, We’ll Kill This Dog” cover. In 1980, he transitioned to Hollywood, working as an associate producer on Ghostbusters (1984). Gross, with artist Brent Boates, refined Dan Aykroyd’s original concept for the “No-Ghost” logo—a cartoonish ghost in a red circle with a slash, initially intended for the Ecto-1 and uniforms. Its clean, universal design became a pop-culture phenomenon, topping Pratt Institute’s 2012 survey of admired alumni icons. Gross’s role extended to managing special effects artists and contributing to films like Heavy Metal and Ghostbusters II, where he redesigned the logo with a two-fingered gesture. His graphic design background, including work for the 1968 Mexico City Olympics and John Lennon, shaped his versatile career. Gross later retired to painting and photography in California, passing away from cancer in 2015. His logo remains a timeless symbol of the Ghostbusters franchise.

Picture a pair of scissors. There's a good chance they're orange, but have you ever wondered why? ✂️

It’s thanks to the Finnish company Fiskars. In 1967 the plastics industry was exploding, and the material was finding its way into many household objects.

The industrial designer Olof Bäckström was working on creating plastic tabletops and other home goods at Fiskars. He had some orange plastic left over from making juicers, which became the material for his prototype scissors.

The invention of injection moulding meant that plastic and steel could be merged, and Bäckström took advantage of this by combining a pair of heavy metal sheers with plastic, and designing an ergonomic handle that actually curved to fit the user's hands - a first.

Fiskars have since sold more than 1 billion pairs of these iconic scissors.

Yasuo Kuroki was a Japanese graphic designer and Sony’s in-house designer who created the iconic Sony logo in 1973. Working under Akio Morita and Norio Ohga, Kuroki refined earlier logos from 1955, emphasizing simplicity and modernity. His minimalist design, featuring clean typography, became a globally recognized symbol of Sony’s innovation. Kuroki’s work focused on clarity and timelessness, contributing to Sony’s brand identity. His logo remains largely unchanged, a testament to its enduring impact.

In 1984, Sony launched a worldwide competition inviting designs for a new logo. Nearly 30,000 entries poured in, and the company awarded the prize money as promised. However, Sony ultimately decided to stick with their original logo, running an ad in *TIME* magazine to politely say, “Thanks, but no thanks.”
