The WTA & ATP have suspended play on their tours through June 8, and frozen ranking points through that time. It is the right thing to do. The ATP's full statement along with my response to it on the ATP site are below.
The ATP & WTA are doing the right thing here, and I applaud them. Ever since the cancellation of Indian Wells many, including myself have called for the ranking's to be frozen. Rankings are meant to reflect the player's performance during a tournament/season. Rankings should not change because tournaments are not played and points fall off with no chance to defend them.
This decision is also the tours answer to the French Open's unilateral decision to move to September a week after the US Open. The tours will not deduct the points from the 2019 French Open so it is unlikely they will offer points for the rescheduled 2020 version. With no points on offer players can concentrate on the regularly scheduled tour events that will offer points, should they be played. I love clay court tennis and will miss not seeing any play on the surface this year, chances are they will be no grass or Wimbledon either. I and every other tennis fan look forward to seeing the American hard courts and indoor fall season being played.
After careful consideration, and due to the continuing outbreak of COVID-19, all ATP and WTA tournaments through 23 May 2020 in the Spring clay-court swing will not be held as scheduled.
