Sharing one of my favorite quotes today. I thought it was appropriate given one of our founding fathers said it and the 4th of July was yesterday.

I say this to my clients all the time. If we don't have a solid plan in place, we're setting ourselves up for failure. A prime example of this was me last week. I was out sick for three days and I put off planning and scheduling my LinkedIn posts. Guess what happened? They didn't get done!

The same can be said for our hiring strategy and employer branding. If we lose control of the day doing something like putting out another HR fire, our strategy gets put on the backburner, and likely won't get done. And it's understandable. Sometimes there are more important things that take precedence. It's also exactly why we need to have a solid strategy and implementation plan in place to keep the momentum going even when things go awry.

Yesterday I had a fantastic call with Dora L Rankin, one of my business coaches. We talked about so many things, but one of the most important things was how we would develop strategies for my business.

Benjamin Franklin said “Failure to plan is planning to fail.” Everyone needs a strategy, whether you’re running your own business or trying to recruit top talent for your company.

One of the five biggest mistakes I see businesses make is not having a solid recruiting strategy. They go rogue and hope for the best. And honestly, I’ve been there.

When I was an HR department of one, some days it felt like I was drowning, especially when our company was facing less than ideal candidates or employees that left within the first 90 days.

I knew something had to give so I got to work. I began creating a strategy and revamping our entire recruiting, hiring, and onboarding process.

After putting in time to develop a strategy we saw:
⭐️ More high quality candidates
⭐️ Job seekers that were excited about the opportunity to work for our organization
⭐️ More employees that stayed past 90 days

How does a broken TV relate to employer branding? I know it seems far fetched but stay with me here.

Yesterday, my 2 year old was playing and broke my parents’ TV. He wasn’t mad or throwing a tantrum. He was playing and had a 2 year old impulse to throw a toy. It was an accident, but it still broke the TV. Of course we replaced the TV because it’s the right thing to do.

So how does this relate to employer branding and how we market our company as the top place to work?

Mistakes happen. We are going to mess up when it comes to our employer branding and recruitment marketing. But this can actually work in our favor.

How? It shows the human side of our company. We all make mistakes, it’s how we handle them that shows our true colors.

Many people let that fear of imperfection stop them from taking action. I’m here to tell you DON’T.

Messy, imperfect action is better than no action at all. If you don’t take any action, then you are guarantee to get NOWHERE.

That is one of the BIGGEST MISTAKES organizations make with their employer branding.

Your best is going to look very different on different days.

That perspective was life changing. As we wrap up mental health month, I wanted to share it with you. It’s gotten me through some very difficult times.

For those of you that don’t know, I have depression, anxiety, and OCD. Every day is a battle with myself, and for the most part it’s a winning one. Shout out to Zoloft, you the real MVP! 🙌

But some days I do struggle. Like really struggle. I’ll give you an example.

Last week I had a day where I could barely get out of bed. (Thanks depression 🙄)
I wasn’t sad, but apathetic. Just the thought of getting out of bed required an exorbitant amount of energy. My best on that day was getting out of the bed and brushing my teeth.

Another day last week (after my bad mental health day), I was rocking and rolling in my business, folded 10 loads of laundry, and was so productive. My best that day was lots of productivity.

Most days I have are in between those 2 extremes.

In the past I would have beat myself up for “only” being able to get out of bed. But because I allowed myself to celebrate that as a big win for me, it helped me make my way out of my depressive state.

Changing my mindset has required lots of coaching, meds to give my brain the biological component it needs, and a kick ass support system. It has taken YEARS and YEARS to get to this place and I still learn and grow every single day. If I can do it, you can.

With that being said, I encourage you to reach to your loved ones and support system when you are struggling. It is what they are there for. You are NOT a burden.

So this is your reminder to be gentle with yourself because you are doing the absolute BEST you can. And your best will look very different on different days.

Ahhh my second favorite F word. 😜

But in all seriousness, sometimes it's hard to stop working on weekends or whenever you get a momentary reprieve from your precious 3 screaming children.

I have been taking the time to be more intentional with my time.

I started being more protective of not only how I spend my time, but also what I spend my energy on.

Each Friday we have a family dinner together with husband's family. It's a great way to step back and reconnect with everyone each week.

The work CAN wait.

I'm sure I'll get some that disagree with me on this, and that's okay.

BUT, I've seen this for myself. You do not have to post every single day, multiple times a day to get results.

Consistency is MORE important than frequency.

Who here has posted every single day for a month and then didn't post again for 3 months?

(raises hand)

Yep. I'm guilty of it too.

However, I have found that being consistent is far more important.

If you can only find time to post 3 times a week, but you can do it consistently, then do it. That will be far better than posting every single day, 3 times a day and then going radio silent for a few weeks.
