New entrepreneurs ask “How do I come up with a good business name?!” all the time. I like to share how I came up with my business name, Oree Virtual, because it’s kind of unconventional.

When I was getting ready to officially incorporate my business and start designing a brand, I was stuck at a standstill for a few weeks.

Because I didn’t have a name, I felt like I couldn’t move forward with my biz which means I wasn’t growing and was feeling really down and totally uncreative. I was trying to come up with something clever that encompasses everything my business is about... which felt and was pretty impossible!

Then I started thinking about how some of the biggest brand names out there are words that don’t mean anything clever at all. Nike, Google, Sony are great examples.

I stopped trying to be clever and I decided to choose a business name that meant something to me. Something short that’d make me happy whenever I said it.

Now comes the context for this first photo of The Broken Kingdoms novel by NK Jemisin—I am an absolute fantasy book fiend! This book is one of my favorite fantasy books of all time.

I randomly picked this book off a used bookstore shelf one day and immediately fell madly and deeply in love.

So what does this have to do with my business name?? Oree Shoth is the name of the main character in this book! My business is about me and I’m a huge fantasy nerd 🤓 so Oree llc was born! For my Doing Business As name, not just my legal entity name, I added Virtual because I help businesses with their online presence.

So to any new entrepreneurs out there putting their work on hold or feeling totally stuck because they can’t come up with a name for their biz: don’t worry about being clever. Your business name doesn’t have to stand for anything, the meaning of your business will come from your mission statement and content.

Pick something that has meaning for you and it’ll be like an insider secret you have with yourself forever.

I don't take selfies often and I think it's mostly because I'm in pajamas 90% of the time lol.

I travel around A LOT with my partner for their work and we're often in super rural places that don't give me much reason to get dressed and get out of the house. And since I work from home, I don't HAVE to get out or get dressed.

Often that leaves me feeling pretty blah about myself and how I look.

But one thing that ALWAYS makes me feel incredible is getting a haircut. Truly if I'm not feeling my hair, I just don't feel like myself.

So this selfie was taken after a fresh new haircut and it's one of my favorite pictures of myself because I feel like me. Haircuts are one of my favorite forms of self-care.

How do you stay feeling good about yourself if you work from home?

I design graphics, websites, content, and do SEO, but my mission is to help women, people of color, LGBTQIA+, and other underrepresented entrepreneurs shift the status quo so that we become the majority in business and leadership.

The way we view content online has totally revolutionized the way we need to write.⁠

In order to make our content super readable and to slow down that scroll action, you've got to break your content up into super short paragraphs-a few sentences at most.⁠

Adding in bold subtitles, bulleted lists, and photos/graphics are also excellent tactics for making content more engaging and readable.⁠

When I first read this quote I had no idea it was a twenty one pilots quote... maybe I should start listening to them. The sentiment is a powerful one though, particularly for women in business.

While there is still so much more work to do, there has been a lot more conversation and action around the importance and benefits of more diversity at work and in positions of power.

This is absolutely a start, but without intentional inclusion, diversity means next to nothing. We have to build spaces, spaces of influence, that CENTER women, people of color, LGBTQIA+, and other underrepresented folks.

It's not enough for us to be in the room and heard, we must be listened to.

The future is femme. But right now it's still a struggle trying to gain our power in spaces centering and dominated by men.

I want to give my thanks to the femmes who have gone before us, carving out the spaces we occupy today. I want to recognize all of the badass femmes out there creating spaces from the ground up that simply don't have a glass ceiling to break through by design.

I also want to offer my support to everyone out there still struggling because I know how rough it can be to be underrepresented and undervalued.
