An extraordinary and a surreal week for Blum Consulting Partners co-founder T. Alex Blum.

Yesterday, the New York Post featured Alex and his three biological brothers in a two-page spread following the release of his memoir, 𝘈𝘯 𝘈𝘤𝘤𝘪𝘥𝘦𝘯𝘵 𝘰𝘧 𝘉𝘪𝘳𝘵𝘩. The story of discovering, at age 60, that he was the oldest of four full brothers after a lifetime of not knowing his origins.

The article captures not only the remarkable reunion itself, but also the emotional return to New York, where Alex’s story began.

With experience spanning marketing, advertising, consulting, commercial and feature film production, T. Alex Blum is well known throughout the creative and production communities.

However, as his new book–”An Accident of Birth”–chronicles, Blum wasn’t always in the know when it came to aspects of his own life and familial roots.

In “An Accident of Birth,” Blum shares the life-altering discovery he made at the age of 60–namely that he was the eldest of four biological brothers he never knew existed. The revelation came when a stranger who turned out to be Blum’s niece received an extra test by mistake. Blum, who was born in 1955, had always known he was adopted, yet the secrecy of the era kept every detail of his origins sealed. He spent decades without a single clue about where he came from, or why he had been given up.

Raised by a wealthy family on Manhattan’s Upper East Side, Blum grew up surrounded by privilege but plagued by a deep sense of disconnection. He often felt out of place and emotionally unmoored, yearning for a sense of belonging that never arrived.

Having built a career helping others tell their stories, first for brands as a commercial producer and then as a feature film producer–with credits including Behind Enemy Lines and Flight of the Phoenix for 20th Century Fox–Blum finally puts the lens on himself in “An Accident of Birth.”

More than a memoir of adoption and reunion, “An Accident of Birth” explores the universal emotional landscape shared by adoptees everywhere. With candid, affecting prose, Blum examines the pressures of “adoptee gratitude,” the quiet ache of alienation, and the lifelong search for identity, connection, and home.

Published by , “An Accident of Birth” debuts next week. Pre-ordering for audiobook and Kindle is underway. The paperback will come out on May 12.

Advertising pedigree
Blum currently teams with Andrea B. Ruskin to lead San Diego-based Blum Consulting Partners, which earned distinction when it was included in the 2025 .5000 list of the fastest-growing private companies in America. Ranked by Inc. at #117 nationally among marketing, advertising and PR companies, Blum Consulting Partners, Inc. benefits from co-founder Blum’s ad industry pedigree.

As partner/executive producer of the production company Headquarters, Blum turned out award-winning commercials and branded content. He also had a stint on the agency side at Lintas, Paris.

During his tenure at the now former Headquarters, Blum served in such major industry roles as AICP (Association of Independent Commercial Producers) chairman and head of the AICP national labor committee.

Create better stories.
Tell more authentic stories.
Find the right narrative.

And yet, even as organizations invest more heavily in content, brand platforms, and creative vision, the work often feels thinner, noisier, and less resonant than ever.

Why? 🤦🏻‍♀️

Because the structures designed to support the creative process are failing.

The process is fragmented, ideas get diluted.

When work passes through too many hands, too many partners, and too many disconnected incentives, even the strongest story loses coherence.

The result is activity without impact, output without meaning.

Sound familiar? 🤦🏻‍♀️

A longer format doesn’t automatically make the story better.

Although conventional advertising can be “interruptive” and “annoying”, the best ads still capture audience attention because they entertain.

This is even more essential for longer format or episodic work.

The assumption in the market right now is that if it’s longer, it’s easier to make the story better.

But that’s not how storytelling works.

A longer format or an episodic structure doesn’t mean a thing if the story isn’t compelling and it won’t deliver results or make a useful connection if it isn’t on brand.

A weak idea doesn’t improve with runtime, it’s actually more annoying and easier to turn off.

Good storytelling isn’t about duration.

It’s about whether the work can build connections without relying on media spend and a captive audience.

Before you invest in longer format or episodic ideas, make sure you have a coherent strategy to define what stories work for the brand.

🚦Success isn't defined after launch.

It's defined before you greenlight a project!

Entertainment investments often come with ambiguous ROI expectations.

The brands that navigate this well align early on:

🚦What does success look like?

🚦What metrics matter?

🚦What is the work meant to accomplish?

Clarity before ex*****on prevents second-guessing after the fact.

Internal Alignment is part of the creative process

Just back from SXSW after a few years away.....and I’m still thinking about it.

At first, it felt… chaotic. Spread across hotels, hard to navigate, impossible to schedule. But that’s the point.

Once we let go of trying to optimize every session (and realized you could get into almost anything), the experience shifted. It became less about checking boxes and more about discovery.

What stood out:

✳️ The format is the magic.

SXSW isn’t CES. It’s not about big product reveals or polished corporate narratives. It’s a collision of ideas film, music, culture, creators, tech, all layered together. That mix makes it far more inspiring.

✅ The energy is real.

The conversations, panels, and interviews felt alive. Not overly scripted. Not overly precious. Just people sharing what they’re seeing and doing.

💯 Creators & culture are leading.

There was far more focus on the creator economy and cultural relevance than traditional marketing. Maybe that felt less novel to us because we live it but it’s clearly where the center of gravity has shifted.

👀 You don’t need to see everything.

In fact, you shouldn’t. After a few sessions, you realize many themes repeat. The value comes from the unexpected moments, the one speaker, the one perspective, the one idea you didn’t plan for.

Net takeaway:

SXSW isn’t about efficiency, it’s about exposure. And in a world where we’re all optimizing everything, there’s something powerful about an experience designed for exploration instead.

Highlights for me were Brand Innovators, Scott Galloway Andrew Ross Sorkin Gavin Newsom, and Progressive Insurance (Stephanie Courtney, aka Flo Sean McBride Meghan Walsh Brendan Gibbons

And of course connecting with friends!

Don’t mistake novelty for quality. ⚠️

Entertainment isn’t just another name for content.

There is work out there getting a lot of attention:

▶️ episodic stories
▶️ holiday stories
▶️ long form video
▶️ celebrity talent
▶️ movie references and tie-ins

But are they good, are they original stories? Do they actually connect?

Good storytelling is hard. ⚠️

Quality matters. If it’s just more content, it’s more of the same. Disposable and interruptive.

More is not inherently better..

And calling it entertainment doesn’t make it so.
