OpenAI now has an AI answering its own support phone line. They say it resolves 75% of incoming issues without a human — their number, about their own support line, so add salt to taste. They've started rolling the same system out to big companies: a bank in Mexico, SoftBank in Japan. Enterprise-only for now, deployed by OpenAI's own engineers. You can't buy this for your shop today.

So why should a small business care? Because of what it does to expectations.

When the bank and the phone company answer instantly at 9 pm, "we'll get back to you Monday" starts feeling slower than it used to — even for a five-person business.

The good news: you don't need an AI phone agent to keep up. Most of what customers actually want answered at 9 pm is already yours to give:

A 100-year-old Philadelphia gallery lost its website overnight. It had been compromised, and their host took it offline to keep everyone safe — which was the right call, but it left a respected institution with no web presence and no realistic way to bring the old site back.

🚀 Two big AI headlines dropped today — and both matter if you run a business or a website.

First: Anthropic just became the world's most valuable AI startup, raising $65B at a $965B valuation and edging past OpenAI. The pace of this race is hard to overstate.

Second — and more useful day-to-day: they shipped Claude Opus 4.8, an upgrade to their flagship model with stronger coding, reasoning, and knowledge-work skills.

But the headline feature isn't raw power. It's honesty.

The new model is far more likely to flag uncertainty and far less likely to make claims it can't back up. For anyone using AI in real work, that's the upgrade that counts. A tool that tells you when it doesn't know beats a confident one that quietly gets it wrong — especially with a client, a deadline, or your reputation on the line.

$2 trillion in software value erased this year. Anthropic going from $1B to $30B in 16 months. Sam Altman, after attacks on his home, publicly conceded that the public's fear is reasonable.

That's just the surface of an Axios piece published today framing this moment as "the dawn of a new Atomic Age."

A few takeaways worth sitting with:

→ Nearly 100% of the code written inside Anthropic is now AI-generated. OpenAI's chief scientist has set 2028 as the target for a fully autonomous AI researcher. Anthropic's co-founder expects a decision between 2027 and 2030 on whether to let AI recursively self-improve — and calls that the most dangerous step.

→ Investors spent the year repricing software companies as it became clear which human jobs the latest models will erase: coding, real estate services, legal research, and financial management.

→ Stanford's 2026 AI Index found the Foundation Model Transparency score fell from 58 to 40 in a single year. The most capable models are now the least transparent — and there are no real disclosure requirements.

As someone who builds for the web, I'm watching this acceleration with a mix of awe and unease.

📧 Big Change Coming to Gmail: The End of POP3 Fetching Is Here

If you are like many freelancers and business owners who use a personal Gmail account as a "central hub" to fetch emails from your custom domain (e.g., [email protected]), you need to know this:

Google is discontinuing the "Check mail from other accounts" (POP3) feature on the web.

🚫 The Ramification:

Starting January 2026, Gmail on the web will no longer pull in emails from your external hosting accounts. If you rely on that single inbox to manage everything, that connection is going to break. You won't miss emails—they just won't arrive in your Gmail interface anymore.

✅ The Alternatives:

1. The "Unified Inbox" Approach (Recommended):

This is the easiest fix. Stop trying to pull mail into Gmail and instead use an app that can view multiple accounts side-by-side.

🍎 For Apple Users: Use the native Apple Mail app. Add your Gmail and domain email (IMAP) separately. It unifies them automatically, so you can view everything in one "Inbox" without Gmail acting as the middleman.

1. For Windows & Android Users: Microsoft Outlook (the new free version) or Thunderbird are your best bets. Both are excellent at handling multiple IMAP accounts in a single view. For a more modern feel on Android, check out Spark Mail. Proton Mail is another option, and the interface is similar to Gmail.

2. Server-Side Forwarding (Platform Agnostic):

Log into your hosting control panel (cPanel, etc.) and set up a "Forwarder" to send all incoming domain mail to your Gmail address. Note: This fixes reading, but replying "as" your domain from Gmail is becoming increasingly difficult with new security protocols.

3. Dedicated Email Hosting:

It might be time to move your domain email to a dedicated provider like Google Workspace or Fastmail if you need a robust web interface. Another option is NameCheap, which offers inexpensive and reliable business email accounts.

My take: As someone deeply in the Apple ecosystem, I'm leaning into Apple Mail.
