Osmium Market and the Big Bang

Crystallized Osmium went through its peak in 2017 when hitting the mark of 890 Euro net/g. The current price of Osmium can be found here: http://www.osmium-preis.com/de/price/eur/

The price of Osmium has risen about 450 percent in the first three years since crystallization was discovered.

Now, with an open market and new Osmium-Institutes being founded across the globe to manage certification, new and dynamic developments are expected.

The most interesting part of this development is yet to happen. By selling more and more Osmium to investors, the metal stays with private individuals and may finally be sold back to the jewellery market. Once worked into jewellery, almost none of the osmium included in jewellery pieces will be available for resale ever again.

This could, in time, lead to a scenario which commodity experts refer to as the Osmium Big Bang. When raw Osmium can no longer be extracted in the platinum mines, there may occur substantial price hikes.

Naturally, it is impossible to predict if and when the Big Bang will happen. Current scenarios are based on a time period of 5 to 15 years from now.

Crystallization

In early 2013 it became possible to crystallize Osmium for the first time. It took the team nearly 40 years to get there. The process makes the metal stable and non-toxic up to at least 400 degrees Celsius.

Naturally, this resulted in massive economic impacts on crystallized Osmium. For the very first time it was possible to use the precious metal by creating elements of wrist watches and jewelry.

In addition to being complicated, long termed and performed under extremely high temperatures, the process is quite dangerous. A lot of specific measures need to be taken to ensure everybody’s safety in the laboratory. This huge effort is one of the reasons why crystallizing Osmium is extremely expensive.

A Bit of History
Osmium was discovered in 1804 by an Englishman Smithson Tennant (1761-1815). It was
found along with iridium in platinum ore extracted form Columbian mines. In the same period,
another Englishman William Wollaston (1765-1828) extracted palladium and rhodium from
Columbian platinum.
Osmium was named by Tennant after the Greek Osmè (“smell”) because of the peculiar odour of
the very volatile osmium oxide.

Osmium is a very rare metal, it is the rarest platinum-metal: less than 200 kg are extracted each year
compared to more than 200 tons for platinum and palladium.
