Sharing knowledge is never wrong as long as you are crediting the source. Being inspired by someone else's business, their pricing model, their service packages or even their portfolio is also not wrong... But if you find yourself tempted to copy and paste their website verbiage or duplicate their designs (be it for a virtual rendering, for your new logo or something else), check yourself. What they are doing might be great for them - honestly, you can't really know for sure - but you can be certain it will not be great for you.

Your brand, service offerings, and marketing should be aligned with your ideal client and you should be so busy serving them that you don't have time to stalk your colleagues or competitors. In fact, if you have a niche market and target client, you will naturally eliminate your own competition.

Your social media schedule should be far simpler than what you've been told. You only need to post three times per week, ensuring that you have one personal post and one portfolio/inspiration post, and one educational/tip post. Create a posting schedule that is easy to maintain, such as every Monday, Wednesday, and Friday.

Because Instagram and Facebook operate similarly, you can sensibly post the same content to both platforms. However, the hashtag sets I described earlier should only be used on Instagram. LinkedIn is a good place to share personal captions of a more professional nature, some of your best portfolio images, and your recent blog posts.

You don't have to wait for a certain number of clients or a certain dollar amount in your bank account before you declare to the world that you won't touch a project for less than $10,000 (and honestly, that is pretty darn low for the home industry). As long as you are marketing in such a way that ensures your perceived value aligns with that dollar amount - and most importantly - as long as you are providing a level of service and an end product that matches or exceeds that dollar amount...

My friend, you can charge whatever the heck you want, as much as you want. There are people who will pay you without batting an eye because you were able to prove yourself to them before ever meeting them. If you are going to play with the big girls (and boys), you'd better be ready to level up and stand out.

Are you unsure about what to post on Instagram for your business? Do you ask yourself what should I say in the captions?

Your caption doesn't need to relate to your photo. For example, I might post a photo of a latte. Does that mean my caption should clearly outline my undying love for the Irish cream latte? Not necessarily. If I want to talk about the latte, I might use it as a springboard to share my Irish heritage or to share that I'm exhausted from a long night with my little girl, or that the struggles of a work-at-home-mom are oh-so-real.

Or, I might just start talking about marketing. Why? Because the photo's job is to get the attention of your fans. The caption is more important than the image you post. The caption is what will create interest, intrigue, friendships, and business relationships.

Your captions should contain information on one of the following each time you post: A sneak peek into who you are aside from your business, a tip or a story that relates to your services, or details about one of your past projects.

Use fresh air, prayer, and meditation to remove creativity blocks. Whether you are working on your own marketing or trying to put together a unique plan for a client, facing a mental roadblock can feel like the biggest waste of time. I've found the best way to navigate that is to do something completely unrelated (laundry, play with my daughter, vacuum - housework is my therapy). I also make time to do a God-centered meditation at least once per day, usually in the early morning. This centers my mind and soul, helping me be more proactive and less reactive throughout the day.

Figure out what ongoing help you need. If you are anything like me, you've been told many times that you need to ask for more help. In order to get the right type of help, however, you need to be specific about what you need. Childcare on specific days of the week or certain times of the day? Outsourcing something in your personal life (like house cleaning or lawn care)? Outsourcing something in your business? In my case, I need an afternoon daycare for my daughter. Once that begins, I'll dedicate those hours to my deep work and reserve mornings for less intense tasks, such as personal chores and errands.

Memberships are great ways to create leveraged income for your business, but if they are truly that easy to run, more people would have them. I'm not going to paint some idealistic picture of running a membership, but I'm not going to be shy when I tell you about the payoffs, either.

It can be so easy to go off the rails when trying to offer the best customer service to your members. You might find yourself saying yes to things that aren't actually covered in the membership, putting you a step removed from the leveraged income model and making you feel more like a custom service provider. Know when to say no, and know when to innovate. Is there a way to offer a deliverable at a scale that feels custom to the member but is efficient for you to provide? There might be a way, and you might be the first to discover it.

Are you confused about SEO? Are you worried that your interior design, home staging, or workroom website won’t be found on the first page of Google? Just like social media, SEO has been over-complicated, overthought, and completely blown out of proportion. In fact, SEO anxiety has driven many business owners to spending hundreds of dollars they’ll never get back, all in the hope of “getting on the first page of Google.”
