6 Types of Business Partners That Will Teach You the Hardest Lessons Ever!
The issue of partnerships hits my inbox on a daily basis. Many of us now prefer to be “one-man armies,” because we’ve seen too many partnerships end dismally. Truth be told, we don’t trust each other. And honestly? More often than not, we’re right not to. If we want to build serious businesses, we must be smart about partnerships. That means avoiding wrong people altogether. I normally say, 'don't marry the devil and pray that he be saved'. Devils don't repent!
Here are seven types of business partners you should never, ever work with — unless you want to see your business crash and burn.
1. The Silent Saboteur
They act like the perfect partner—calm, agreeable, and cooperative. But they are experts at killing progress without making a sound. They’ll sit in meetings, nod at everything, and say, “Let’s do it.” But when it’s time to act, they delay, ignore messages, and quietly resist change. If you’re not careful, months will pass, and nothing will move forward—all because of their passive sabotage. If this is your spouse, quickly get them off the business.
2. The Status-Obsessed Partner
This person loves the title, not the work. They want to be called “CEO” or “Co-founder,” but they contribute nothing useful. Instead, they focus on looking successful—fancy offices, expensive events, and business trips that don’t add value. They care more about branding themselves as important than actually growing the business. Before you know it, they’ve drained all the money on pointless luxuries while real work is ignored.
3. The Idea Hoarder/Lazy dreamer
This one never stops talking about “brilliant” business ideas. Every conversation starts with, “I have a game-changing plan.” But when it’s time to execute? Dololo. They avoid difficult tasks, push responsibilities onto others, and somehow still expect to reap the rewards. Before you realize it, you’re doing all the heavy lifting while they sit back, taking credit for your effort.
4. The Emotional Volcano
Business is stressful, but this person turns every small issue into a disaster. When things don’t go their way, they explode — shouting, blaming, and making emotional, reckless decisions. They take every disagreement personally, hold grudges, and refuse to handle problems professionally.
5. The Indecisive Perfectionist
This person believes everything must be perfect before taking action. They overanalyze every detail, demand unnecessary changes, and delay launching for months because “it’s not ready yet.” While they sit there tweaking a logo or fine-tuning a business plan, competitors are making money. A perfectionist partner will waste time and opportunities, holding the business hostage with their fear of failure.
6. The One with a Troubled Marriage
This might sound harsh, but personal instability will ruin a business. A partner who is constantly fighting with their spouse, dealing with infidelity scandals, or facing financial problems due to a messy home life will bring that chaos into your business. Their stress will affect decision-making, legal battles could entangle company assets, and sudden financial needs may lead them to make selfish, desperate moves. If someone’s personal life is in constant crisis, they won’t be able to focus on growth.
If African businesses are going to grow beyond small hustles, we need to build trust and partnerships. But not just any partnerships—the right ones. The biggest reason people avoid business partners is fear of betrayal, laziness, or incompetence. And honestly, that fear is justified. The wrong person will destroy everything.
But the right partner? They will multiply your success. Choose wisely. Study people before committing. Look beyond their words and watch how they handle money, pressure, and responsibility. Your business is your future—don’t let the wrong partner ruin it.
