200 acres of undeveloped Hudson Valley land held decades of memories for this family. When they came to AMA, the brief focused on the site: preserving stands of mature oaks, developing pastures for horses, and connecting architecturally with a landscape they already loved.

The house sits near the top of a hill yet reads as horizontal, pulling close to the ground. Pre-weathered Philippine mahogany and fieldstone salvaged from an upstate New York barn give the exterior its material logic, with forms that reference what was already there. Inside, an impressive sliding door system opens the living room to the rear terrace and the meadow beyond, while triple-pane windows keep the envelope tight on a windy part of the hill.

An empty nest prompted a couple in Mill Valley to search for a home for the next stage of their lives, a place where they can both relax and entertain friends and family.

worked with the homeowners to rethink the 1920s-era Fairfax property from the entry sequence out, raising the roofline to clarify the arrival, enlarging windows throughout, and opening the living room to a deck. When demolition revealed a hidden view of Mt. Tam behind an interior wall, they captured it with a new window above the fireplace.

A relocated pool, a 400 sf pool house/ADU, and a sauna complete the outdoor living program. Every exterior structure is painted in dark charcoal, a quiet move that keeps the built forms from competing with the watershed behind them.

Michael Hennessey of is featured in the August | September issue of .

Known as a minimalist, Hennessey's aims are far from minimal. As he puts it: "My hope is that it elicits an emotional response. That's the goal, which is very hard to get to, but I think every now and again, a project will reach the point of being magical. When people come into a space and gasp — that's what we're trying to get to."

Writer Laurel Delp profiles the firm's work and philosophy in the magazine's "Rendering" column.

A renovation fueled by friendship. ✨

Keith and Andrew, longtime friends of the Architect, Caroline Nassif of , wanted their first home together to reflect their playful, social life: colorful, flexible, and anything but generic. Their friendship began 13 years ago at an adult summer camp and has since included many dinner parties and game nights. The team approached the renovation as a deeply personal collaboration rooted in trust.

The 1921 Oakland Craftsman had other ideas. Steep access, out-of-plumb surfaces, and surprise leaks shaped the process as much as the program did. The team rebuilt carefully, adjusting the envelope and water management along the way, while embracing the 1921 cottage's warm modernist character through texture and color. Today, the home functions exactly as imagined: a welcoming hub for friends and future family, with a personality to match its owners.

Now featured in the June 2026 issue of , and a special thank you to for bringing it to the pages of SHLTR.
