Porter's generic strategies describe how a company pursues competitive advantage across its chosen market scope. A company can either be differentiating, overall cost leadership or focused within a niche, while also adopting a differentiated or cost leadership approach.

The sales volume, sales margin and competitive basis of a company can be looked at when determining what strategy the firm is actually achieving.

Burberry as an example, does not compete with competitors on price, attaching intangible benefits to their products. They also suppress sales volume through reduced product breadth and have relatively high net-profit margins. Therefore, it is evident that they are taking a differentiation approach.
