Random Musings of a creative ever wondered what goes on in the mind of a creative? Here is an inside look...

Every creative wants to be the best in their craft. We all have the potential to be the best but in most cases we end up being mediocre or just basic because we have an unwillingness to learn other crafts .

I am a multimedia content creator by profession and over the years have worked with a number of organizations including governments . In my years I have discovered that it is not enough to be a good designer or content developer there are other skills that are needed in order to be successful. I was a freelance designer for a season and the one skill that set me apart was not the quality of my designs but my ability to put across my vision for the organization . Every designer needs to be able to draw up a proposal/pitch , that pitch will set you up for success .

We need to take time to learn what it takes to create a winning pitch and a winning proposal. An ability to research and understand who your client is, their competitors, their values and their strengths and weaknesses . Armed with such information you can create a killer pitch .

Let us not relax because I know how to create a killer brand, let’s continue developing and learning a new skill. Take up a course on writing for business , be able to create a pitch deck and learn how to effectively present your idea.

The seems to be a new scourge that is affecting the creative industry... I remember a time where many individuals sought the services of a creative be it a designer, content creator photographer for free ( well technically not free but offered them payment in the form of exposure) . Just recently a well known tourism magazine made news on social media after soliciting the services of a well known photographer and offered to pay him through mentions and credits in their magazine which they sell as well as have paid for adverts ..

Unfortunately exposure does not pay the bills neither does it put food on our tables . No sooner had we thought we have won the battle against exposure payments another scourge has attacked our fraternity .
This new scourge is often disguised as an opportunity for work or an opportunity to get more work if selected . The new scourge is ‘ design competitions’ . A lot of organizations are now hosting design competitions for their branding, marketing material s and often have a relatively high prizes for the winner but the rest of the par takers walk away with nothing . For the winner yes this works out but for the rest of the entrants it doesn’t do justice for them to invest time energy, skills and resources to move away with nothing , it is even worse because they dnt even get the exposure . Some of the competitions go as far as claiming ownership of my design entered in to the competitions which means they ultimately have hundreds of designs and concepts for free yet we gladly accept .

I have also noticed that some of our very own peers are hosting design completions for things that they can’t do be it motion graphics etc , and they now offer meagre prizes to the winners and often times end up not paying under the guise of collaboration or prospective future projects . It saddens me that the ones we look up to are the vultures that are circling above us to eat the meagre scraps that we have and the very ones that cry no to free design. I too have been a part of the problem and I think our solution is to start demanding payment or a form of reward for our efforts and no exposure doesn’t cut it , if I am to work let me be paid for my work , I will not compete to have my blood sweat and tears be the foundation of someone’s greatness when they step over my head and bury me alive in the process . If we are collaborating then I will have a share of the pie ....

I say no to free design

Find Solace in your craft

There has always been this misconception that creatives are loud, and love bright colors, are the life of the party when they do go out. Whilst this might be true for some creatives, thereare those misunderstood recluses that keep to themselves, The Creative Introvert.
I am one of those, while i am required by the nature of my work to go out and speak to clients and all, i find solace in sitting down by my computer with my headsets on blocking the world around me and seek my peace.
my peace is not in what i say, my peace is found when i do what i love, which is bringing Ideas to life. My craft is what brings solace, yes it can be lonely but at the end of the day it is worth it.
I may be misunderstood , called rude or anti social , but then hey my life revolves around my craft as i derive my meaning from it. It is the approval from a client, the return business, the knowledge that i created something and brought a vision, an idea to life that gives my own life meaning.
I decided to find solace in my craft.

Imperfect perfection.

As a creative, one of my biggest challenges is perfection. A design is never complete because we feel it's imperfect, and in our quest for perfection we forget that there is a level of imperfection that is just perfect.

We need to find the balance between perfection and imperfection, and it is in that area that a masterpiece is created and completed .

Make time, that is, to play. What’s your medium? Play with sentences, pastels, vegetables, sand, chords, rhymes, photography, whatever you fancy.

If you’re so busy that you can’t play, well…you need to take a hard look at your schedule and see what can be given up. Making creative expression a priority in your day or week is of incredible value.

Mine is a battle, not with the world but within myself. Thoughts clashing, questions ragging in my head without an answer.

Who can answer the questions? quench the feelings of inadequacy? who can silence the voices in my head? fo mine is a slient scream.

Staring at the wall, seeing bright colors, attempting to recreate the beauty i see outside from within. The picture in my head so clear, but my hands are failing me as they fail to recreate such beauty. All i can do is stive to see that beauty, to see that burst, to see the picture recreated. maybe when lost in my world, and the turmoil within subsides then my hands can cooperate and create the image i want to see.

i silence the voices with music, numb the pain with sleep, but when the silence comes the voices return..definitely mine is a battle with myself.

What i Project and what i am are different...because i am fighting a loosing battle against myself.....

I am the odd creative... I am not outgoing or loud, rather I am the introverted extrovert. It might not make sense to some but that's who I am. I find solace in solitude, lost in my own world, with music as my refuge. It is when I take pen to paper that I am able to communicate, because the spoken word is a challenge.

The words I write and the pictures I create do all the talking. To some I am a proud snob, and to some I am timid but do not mistake my timidity for weakness for int that lies my greatest strength.

I do not have a million friends but the few I have mean a lot... I do not open up to the world because I live in my own world. I am that guy that hides behind his screen, not because he is anti social but that's where he feels he belongs.

With no one to call my own, my pen, my phone, my books become my friends. Stuck in a world of defeating silence contemplating the next step...

Thinking 9f colors that my brighten the coriddors of a gloomy heart... Yes that burst of color might be what is needed but it is an exterior expression of inner turmoil.

In the dark valley of loneliness, once sorounded by many voices but not hearing a thing as my own thoughts drown the noise.

Misunderstood, judged and neglected the creaative toils in his own cave hoping to create a masterpiece that will get the approval and acceptance that he so yearned for but never got.

This is my world, my very existence.

None but ourselves can free our minds.’Bob Marley was saying that we alone must own responsibility for our freedom, for our redemption. But we can do that only if we remember what it means to be free.
