Founder Fridays ✨

Laura's four-year-old just accidentally taught her a leadership lesson, and she's sharing it with us this week.

The why phase is real in her house right now. And she caught herself getting frustrated during an explanation that wasn't landing. Not frustrated with her daughter. Frustrated because she didn't have a good answer.

And she realized that happens in leadership all the time. We get short with people who ask questions, and sometimes it's not about the question at all. It's that we don't have the answer, and we're worried about how that looks.

Spoiler: saying "I don't know, let me find out" is not a weakness. It might actually be one of the more trustworthy things a leader can say.

Have you wondered what culture actually looks like at WISE on a regular Tuesday?

People can feel the difference when you show up and genuinely care about them. And when you don't.

It's the Slack message that references something a team member mentioned earlier in the week. The check-in after the hard day they told you about. Remembering that someone's kid had an appointment or that it was their first day of school.

People want to feel seen, valued, and heard. That's not a management framework. It's just paying attention.

Q&A with Our Account Management Team - Part 1 ✨

We asked our Account Managers what this role really looks like day-to-day. Because we think it's one of the most misunderstood parts of what WISE does.

Most people assume an Account Manager is a project coordinator. Someone who keeps the calendar and passes messages back and forth.

That's not quite it.

"A lot of my day is figuring out what the client really needs and then helping turn that into a plan. Sometimes they know exactly what they want. Sometimes they're looking to us to bring the ideas and the strategy."

And when a new client comes on board?

"I want them to feel excited, supported, and confident that we've got them."

That's the standard we hold ourselves to from day one. If you've been thinking about what it would look like to have that kind of support in your business, the link is in the comments.

Two out of ten businesses fail in their first year. That number hasn't changed much in decades, and the reasons behind it are almost always the same.

Not keeping organized financial records. Operating without a business plan. Investing in too many software tools before the business actually needs them.

These aren't glamorous mistakes. They're the quiet ones that accumulate slowly until one day the cash flow doesn't make sense or tax season becomes a crisis or the founder realizes they've been paying for six tools that do the same thing.

At WISE we've worked with hundreds of small businesses over ten years. The ones that struggle most in the early stages almost always have one thing in common. They prioritized doing the work before they built the foundation underneath it.

Getting the financial and operational basics right early isn't the exciting part of building a business. It's the part that makes everything else possible.

If you've been putting off getting your books in order or haven't looked at your tech stack in a while, September is a good time to fix that before Q4 hits.

Season 2 is coming. Until then, Season 1 has ten episodes that are very much worth your time.

This clip from the finale is one of the things Laura said that we keep coming back to. You can be empathetic and hold people accountable at the same time. Most people treat those as opposites. They're not.

If you've been meaning to listen, this month's themes of culture, leadership mistakes, and mental health make it a pretty good time to start.

79 years of protecting our skies and showing up when it matters most. To every Airman who has served and to the families holding things together at home, today is for you too.

Laura was featured on the Owning Up podcast this week alongside AMSE founder Moni Jefferson. 🎙️

The episode is called Your Seat at the Summit, and it's exactly that. A conversation about why showing up in person matters for military spouse entrepreneurs and why the More Than a MilSpouse Summit on October 9 and 10 in Dallas is worth making the trip for.

A few things Laura said that are worth hearing directly.

"Building a business as an active duty spouse takes a different kind of flex and grit."

"You deserve to be in the room."

"I want my kids to see me loving what I do."

If you've been on the fence about attending the summit or just need a reminder of why community matters when you're building something remotely without a traditional support system around you, this episode is for you.

The 2025 Military Family 360 report just dropped, and for our team, this data isn't background information. It's personal.

84% housing burden. 41% food insecurity. Mental health care not reaching the families who need it most.

This is the community our team members come from and live inside of right now. Active-duty spouses navigating all of this while also building careers and showing up for clients every single day.

We share this because we think it matters to name what military families are actually carrying. Not as a talking point. Because we see it on our own team.

25 years later. We still pause. We still remember.

To the lives lost, the families forever changed, and the first responders and service members who answered the call that day and in the years that followed. This day holds weight in our community that words don't fully capture.

We will never forget.
