The new Kobe Motor Cup will begin in May with the Rallye Ciudad de Pozoblanco, marking the start of a five-round calendar for the single-make championship organised by Kobe Motor.

The Córdoba-based gravel event, part of the 2026 Spanish Gravel Rally Championship (CERT), is scheduled for 1–2 May and will serve as the curtain-raiser for the series. It comes 11 years after Kobe Motor inaugurated its first one-make cup and signals a renewed commitment to national competition.

The championship will feature the latest-generation Toyota Yaris Rally5 Kit, the first FIA-homologated car developed by Kobe Motorsport. The model is set to contest five high-profile events across the Spanish rally calendar.

Following Pozoblanco, the series will move to the mainland gravel rounds of the 2026 Spanish Rally Super Championship (S-CER). The Yaris Rally5 Kit will make its S-CER debut at the Rallye Ciudad de Utiel on 15–16 May, a new addition to this year’s national schedule.

After the summer break, the championship resumes on 11–12 September at the Rallye Princesa de Asturias, the longest-running event on the S-CER calendar and a rally where Kobe Motor competed successfully last season. The Asturian round was also among the events used by Kobe Motorsport to test the Yaris Rally5 Kit during 2025 development.

The closing phase of the campaign will consist of the final two rounds of the 2026 CERT: the Rallye Ciudad de Granada, a regular points-scoring fixture for the cup, and the Rallye de Cáceres, which joins the series for the first time.

A prize of 4,000 euros will be awarded to the winning crew at each of the five rounds. Kobe Motorsport’s prize fund will extend to the top five finishers at every event.

The Motorsport UK Pirelli Welsh Rally Championship will benefit from comprehensive live-streaming coverage across all seven rounds of the 2026 season, organisers have confirmed.

Broadcast production will once again be handled by Special Stage, with Phill Bramhill leading the commentary team throughout the campaign. Live coverage from the special stages is planned at each event, with the primary access point via the championship’s official page.

The dedicated output will cover every crew registered within the Welsh championship, providing increased exposure for competitors and commercial partners. Organisers reported that total coverage for the 2025 season reached one million views, a figure expected to be matched or surpassed in 2026 amid continued growth in championship registrations.

Joint championship co-ordinator Bryn Pierce said: “We're delighted that we can offer our contenders significant live streaming once again in 2026 due to the hugely appreciated support of our sponsors. It's an important part of the championship media package, and we're pleased to be working with the team at Special Stage to bring extensive live coverage. We're looking at one or two developments, including some guest commentators where possible.”

The expanded media presence forms part of a broader effort to enhance the championship’s profile and deliver greater value to stakeholders across the series.

Sandro Munari, one of rallying’s defining figures and the most celebrated exponent of the Lancia Stratos HF, has died at the age of 85.

Known in Italy as “Il Drago” – The Dragon – Munari rose from national competition in the 1960s to become one of the outstanding rally drivers of the 1970s, helping to shape the sport during its formative world championship era.

Born in Cavarzere in the Veneto region in 1940, Munari first made his mark with Italian Rally Championship titles in 1967 and 1969. He added the European Rally Championship in 1973 at the wheel of the Lancia Fulvia Coupé, underlining his status as one of Europe’s leading drivers before a formal world drivers’ championship existed.

Munari’s versatility extended beyond special stages. In 1972 he won the Targa Florio alongside Arturo Merzario in a Ferrari 312PB, a result that demonstrated his ability to compete at the highest level in both rallying and circuit racing.

His enduring reputation, however, rests on his association with Lancia and, in particular, the Stratos HF. Conceived as a purpose-built rally car, the Stratos represented a decisive shift in the sport’s technical direction. Munari became its most accomplished driver, exploiting its short wheelbase and distinctive V6 power to decisive effect.

Over the course of his career he secured seven World Rally Championship victories. Four of those came on the Monte Carlo Rally, where he first triumphed in 1972 with the Fulvia before taking three consecutive wins in the Stratos between 1975 and 1977. Those performances cemented both his own legacy and the mythology of the Stratos, often regarded as rallying’s first true supercar.

In 1977 Munari won the FIA Cup for Rally Drivers, effectively the world drivers’ title before the introduction of an official championship, confirming his position at the forefront of the discipline.

He later competed in machinery including the Fiat 131 Abarth and other specialist entries before easing back from front-line competition in the early 1980s. By the time the Group B era arrived, Munari’s greatest successes already belonged to an earlier, but pivotal, chapter in rallying’s evolution.

Munari’s career spanned the transition from a largely amateur pursuit to a fully professional world championship. His achievements with Lancia, repeated mastery of Monte Carlo and distinctive, committed driving style secured his place among rallying’s most influential names.

I still recall first hearing - and then seeing - the Lancia Stratos HF with Munari at the wheel in Sutton Park on the 1977 Lombard RAC Rally. It was one of those indelible moments that never leaves you.
