A very unique and interesting spring flower photographed by Anna Porter Artist ...

Fritillaria Rubra, a specialty bulb that I ordered online from in the and planted in my garden last fall. Blooming now in .

I love the multiple trumpet shaped blossoms on this flower that stands 3 feet tall on a sturdy stem. I also like the green leaves on top that look like a hairdo. A slightly different variety also comes in yellow. I planted both.

Hot spring tulips!

We planted 800 bulbs last fall — tulips, daffodils and hyacinths. With this past week of unseasonably very warm weather and not a cloud in the sky, our spring garden is coming up tulips EVERYWHERE!

Happy Thanksgiving!
“For my part, I am almost contented just now, and very thankful. Gratitude is a divine emotion: it fills the heart, but not to bursting; it warms it, but not to fever.”

Commentary by Anna Porter:

Halifax, Nova Scotia in Canada — where they locked down hard and listened to public health officials in the spring, re-opened in the summer and remains a bastion of normalcy and relatively Covid-19 free; while the coronavirus rages in the United States just to the south. Nova Scotia keeps a firm quarantine in place for travelers from Canada outside the Maritime provinces and, wisely, the border with the United States remains firmly closed.

Excerpt from the story (click below to read the entire article):

“... we have a sense here in Halifax of what has kept us safe and we know that those things are deeply controversial in the United States: public health care; public media; a social safety net. It’s baffling to watch the epidemic in the United States spin wildly out of control, knowing it could easily be different.”

Yes, my fellow Americans, it could easily be different here. But it isn’t. Because so many Americans have chosen to make mask wearing a political statement; because they obnoxiously refuse to wear masks and they get in the face of anyone who tries to make them do so; because they justify their repulsive, selfish, and dangerous behavior by claiming that it is their “personal freedom” at stake, when, in fact, it is other people’s lives at stake; and because they really don’t care much about other people’s lives or anyone else at all.

In my home state of Washington, where lockdowns have had to be reinstated due to burgeoning Covid-19 cases, and where wedding receptions of any size are now banned, someone decided to ignore that ban and have a wedding reception with 300 people and guess what — it became a super spreader event. Because a couple decided it was their “right” to party, people are now sick are dying. Friends and relatives whom they allegedly cared about are sick and dying. Because they could not find it within themselves to delay the self-gratification of partying and holding off the celebration for a few more months until there is a vaccine widely available.

Until people begin experiencing consequences for their bad decisions and obnoxious behaviors, and until rules and bans put in place to protect lives are actually enforced, having them in place will not solve the problem here. Until people are mandated to wear a mask and to social distance, and it is not a personal choice, and if they do not comply, they are refused entrance to businesses, are heavily fined if seen on the street without one, and are dismissed if they show up for work without one, we have no hope of containing the spread of the coronavirus in this country.

And the thing that all those self-righteous “freedom of choice” mask-less folks don’t seem to realize is that eventually their mask defiance will catch up with them and a lot of them will get sick and die. Unfortunately so will a lot of other innocent people who had the misfortune of sharing airspace with them. And the economy in their areas, which they hold so much more dear than human lives, will fail as businesses are forced to close.

It is because of the stupidity, stubbornness, and obnoxiousness of those mask-less folks out there that hundreds of thousands of people are dying in this country; because some people refuse to wear a mask and social distance and no one cares enough to do a damn thing about it.

Welcome to Nova Scotia, the land that proves that beating back the virus is possible.
