Culturstruction Culturstruction is a design studio working in the areas of art, design and architecture. We believe that designing is re-imagining.

Founded in 2008 in the dying days of Ireland’s property boom, our studio name, ‘Culturstruction’, is a ch

allenge to the knowing or unknowing attempts to enclose and de-politicise the processes of conceiving, making and managing our shared living spaces. It is a critique of the impossibility of the task of ‘constructing culture’ – something too easily forgotten amidst the large scale building and elaborate marketing campaigns of boom-era Ireland. Design is an important and powerful tool that has the potential to effect positive social change. Our work has an emphasis on accessibility, education and community engagement and often addresses social and spatial justice and the hierarchies and ethics of the production of space. Another way is always possible. Culturstruction is led by Jo Anne Butler and Tara Kennedy.

'WEAR SUNSCREEN'

'I am often reminded that you can in fact die of exposure' ... Ciaran Smyth, 'Vagabond Reviews'.

Enjoying thinking back on some of the very honest contributions to yesterday's 'Begin Anywhere' forum at IMMA. We were invited to take part in a discussion on collaborative and self-initiated practice after art college for final years BA students from across Ireland.

Yes, at times we may strayed close to the 'sunscreen song' territory, but it was refreshing to hear such open and energetic discussion about the precariousness, the joy and hard work of self-initiated arts (and design) practice.

Contributions from...
'Vagabond Reviews, Pallas Contemporary, Projects, RGKSKSRG, Askeaton Contemporary Arts, Culturstruction, Catalyst Arts and key note lecture by Ruth Claxton of Eastside Projects.

If you happen to be in Tallin at the moment check out 'New Architecture Ireland' which just happens to feature the work of Culturstruction....

After Tallin the show moves on to KADK in Copenhagen, AHO in Oslo at finally to KTH in Stockholm.

The six design offices featured in 'New Architecture Ireland' are are; Culturstruction, Donal Colfer Architects, Sult, Urban Agency, VAV & AP+E and there is an introductory essay written by John McLaughlin.

'New Architecture: Ireland is a traveling architecture exhibition that presents the work of six young Irish offices that have emerged during the recent economic crisis. Ireland’s financial woes during this period are well documented and this has had an enormous impact on the construction and design sector. This shift has forced architects/designers to refocus and in this way these bleak times have produced new offices and ways of thinking.'

The Culturstruction contribution to Planning for Protest features in Volume #38 - The Shape of the Law. Preview here via Planning for Protest.

Volume #38 - The Shape of Law - features Planning for Protest: 'Some of the greatest legal reform was created through the violence and obstinacy of taking to the streets. Another thing about protests: they occupy space, raising the question: Could such a spatial affair be improved by architects?'
