To date work has included small scale built work, design, exhibition, lectures, workshop facilitation and public realm research. Founded in 2008 in the dying days of Ireland’s property boom, our studio name, ‘Culturstruction’, is a challenge to the knowing or unknowing attempts to enclose and de-politicise the processes of conceiving, making and managing our shared living spaces. It is a critique of the impossibility of the task of ‘constructing culture’ – something too easily forgotten amidst the large scale building and elaborate marketing campaigns of boom-era Ireland. Design is an important and powerful tool that has the potential to effect positive social change. Our work has an emphasis on accessibility, education and community engagement and often addresses social and spatial justice and the hierarchies and ethics of the production of space. Another way is always possible. Culturstruction is led by Jo Anne Butler and Tara Kennedy.
