Real Self Sufficiency Covering all self sufficiency topics - from frugal living, green living, living off the grid, and em Even if it’s tiny steps and simple changes.

My name is Katy, I’m a professional writer and editor, and this website is my digital baby. I started Real Self Sufficiency in 2015 to share my passion, knowledge, mistakes, experiences, and lifestyle in the hopes of helping others to be more self-sufficient and to live greener. And, because I’m a firm believer in absolute honesty, because I longed to create not only a sustainable income for my fa

mily, but something that was worth sustaining. Something I could use my skills and passions to create and, hopefully, something that would help others while helping me and my family to live free. Our family lives as green as we can and we want to educate and inspire others to take steps to reduce their negative impact on the fragile planet that we all share. Every teeny tiny change has a huge beneficial impact. Hence we’ve created the “1 Week to a Greener You” free book. Yes, I said free. And it’s packed full of value, so go download it while it’s available. I do most of the content here, hence the site is growing slower than I’d like. I do, however, work with some very talented and like-minded individuals who produce some content for the site, too. And, if you’d like to be one of them, go here and fill out the short form. Living an eco-conscious lifestyle means a great deal to us. It’s not just about saving the planet – although of course that’s one of the most influential pillars of a green lifestyle – but it’s about saving money (and I mean a lot of money), improving the health of you, your family, and your pets, being less reliant on synthetic goods, “the grid”, imports, chemicals, organizations, and companies, being ready for an emergency scenario, and being as self-sufficient as possible. And no, not everyone can turn their lives into planet-saving havens of crunchy greenness. But all of us can make changes, however big or small. As you join us on this journey, you’ll be amazed at how many small things you can change that make a big difference to you and your family as well as to the environment. Together we’ll explore organic food (both growing it and how to make it affordable if you can’t grow it), the chemicals that many of us use daily without even thinking and the safer but equally effective alternatives, how to make your own green products, homesteading, urban green living, emergency preparedness, and so much more. It’s not all about buying organic cotton and making pretty homemade gifts (although of course that’s a part of being self-sufficient. But, if you suddenly found yourself in the middle of the zombie apocalypse, what would be your chances of survival? Do you have the skills to grow your own food, maintain your tools, and create a safe, sustainable home? It’s about survival, too. Along our journey, it’s likely that you’ll meet other like-minded souls from all over the world, you’ll save some serious cash, reduce your carbon footprint, feel healthier, and reconnect with each other, the planet, your body, your values, and your self. As I noted above, I’m a firm believer in honesty, so here’s how the site works… We generate revenue via donations, ebook sales, Google, and affiliate marketing. Now, affiliate marketing means that we share links to products and, if a reader makes a purchase using one of our links, we get a small commission. But, it’s really important to note that we never, ever share or promote products that we don’t firmly believe in. You’ll see from the reviews we write that if we think something sucks, we tell you. If something has bad points along with good ones, we lay it all out. The good, the bad, and the “meh”. Anything we get goes toward keeping the site up and running, but this is a labor of love above all else even though, as I noted, we hope it grows into a truly sustainable business. But we want you to trust us and to know that we aren’t just making promises in the hopes of landing a sale. We love what we do, we love our readers, and we love our planet. We’d love it if you’d share your favorite articles with your friends and do remember to follow us on social media and subscribe to our newsletter. You can get in touch with us via all the usual social platforms, or you can email us at info@realselfsufficiency.

Some of the most flavourful, nutritious cuts of meat are also the cheapest, because most people walk right past them. Beef cheeks, chicken thighs, pork hocks, lamb ribs -- once you know what to do with them, your grocery budget goes a lot further without your meals getting worse.

Meat prices have been climbing steadily, and if you’ve been shopping the same cuts you always have, you’ve noticed. If you’re not careful, you’ll spend the same amount on meat for a single meal as you would to get three good meals and a couple of lunches just a short time ago. And there’s ...

March gardening feels complicated because not everything is ready at the same time. Some crops want cool soil and can handle frost — peas, spinach, radishes, turnips. Others need warmth and only go outside later. This breaks it all down by what goes in the ground now, what starts under lights, and what needs a few more weeks.

Peas, spinach, and carrots can go straight in the ground this month — but tomatoes and peppers stay firmly inside. Here's exactly what to sow, when, how deep, and what spacing to use for every March vegetable worth growing.

Discover the best ALDI food deals for Dec 10–16, from party mains and snacks to pantry staples, plus smart price comparisons to stretch your grocery budget.

I don’t know about you, but my December grocery list is always longer than my budget. The good news? This week’s ALDI Finds ad (Dec 10–16) is stuffed with party food, splurge-y meats, and snacky bits that are actually decent value, not just cute packaging. I combed through This Week’s ALDI F...

This is NOT the kind of post I usually write or share BUT I think that it's actually more important than ever to build your own income streams. Even better if you can build passive ones.

A BIG part of self-reliance and self-sufficiency, in my opinion, is resilience and that includes FINANCIAL resilience. I want to know that if I lose a client or an income stream tomorrow, it'll be okay, because the other streams can pick up the slack while I build something new.

So, that's what this post is. It's for anyone who is looking to make some extra income, side hustles, and income streams, but don't know where to start or who to trust.

Me and some friends from our passive income mastermind have put together some insanely fantastic offers for Black Friday.

These products are all $10 reduced from $27, and they are all geared toward helping you earn more for yourself, without working yourself into burnout.

I don’t normally write posts like this, but today is different. Building multiple revenue streams is super-important to me, because I firmly believe that a huge part of preparedness and self-reliance is resiliency. And that includes financial resilience. I want to know that if I lose one income st...
