The fortified wine Marsala originated in Sicily but the sauce has a multicultural origin. Queen Maria Carolina of Naples & Sicily (the sister of Marie Antoinette) imported French chefs to cook for her. Having a French Chef became a trend among the Nobels. It is believed that Marsala sauce was created by one of these French Chefs because of the availability and fine flavor of this local fortified wine. Although this sauce has a Italian/French origin it's popularity is now greatest in the United States 🇺🇸
